Project Title

An Automated Application for Impaired persons using sensory glove for American Sign Language Interpretation

Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject Summary

The sign language interpreter glove allows the user to translate the American Sign Language (ASL). The glove is embedded with five flex sensors and accelerometer. The disable will wear the glove and make moves, the sensors will sense the signal and match with the defined pattern. It will produce output which will be displayed on LCD and pass to the EMIC-2 which will convert text to speech and then amplify to produce sound from speaker.

Project Objectives

Often do we come across a deaf or mute person and we need to communicate with him/her. The communication between deaf and hearing persons poses a much stronger problem than the communication between blind and seeing people. The Purpose of this project is to provide deaf and dumb an aid to establish an independent and sustainable life. So, we present a portable device for the people who suffer from speech impairment, providing them an aid to communicate easily.

Project Implementation Method

For implementing this idea, we have used linear pattern matching algorithm. We have defined a pattern of 8-bit for each alphabets based on the flex sensor's resistance values in arduino. Some self-made symbols are also defined such as for enter, forward, backward, backspace.Whenever a person wearing the glove make gestures a pattern is generated and matched with the defined pattern. in this way, the desired alphabet, word or sentence is displayed and heard.

Benefits of the Project

This project is beneficial as:

It will help the deaf and dumb to communicate with the normal people.

It can be launched as an industrial product.

It can be used in schools, hospitals, airports, public places, for delivering lectures and taking lectures.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

This system consists of a glove that can be worn by a deaf to facilitate its conversation in real-time with hearing persons. The system translates the signs to the corresponding letters using, Glove having 5 flex sensors that use carbon strips on plastic to act like variable resistors, LCD that displays the result letters, Accelerometer ADXL and gyroscope to determine the orientation and position of hand and figures, Text to speech module EMIC-2 that will convert stream of text to natural language, C++ language is used on Arduino-UNO where a full operating system would be overloaded for handling simple read and response actions, Speaker connected to Arduino for listening to the meanings of symbols, Buzzer that will beep after completion of word. The system is suspected to help deaf people to communicate with other persons without the need of a human translator.
