Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject SummaryThis project introduces the concept of recognition of different activities to assist elderly and disable people in case of alarming and emergency situations. As the population of handicapped people is increasing widely, so a reliable system is needed to provide them necessary care by detecting emergency situations. It also reduces human dependency as a human source is not available all the time. Ambient sensors based system can help such people to have a higher quality of living standards and can prolong their independent life. Wearable and other sensors are sometimes not applicable when handicapped people do not want or forget to wear sensors them and also because of some technical and social issues. Efficient utilization of energy is a complex issue when it comes to disabled people. As efficient resource consumption can conserve the earth’s natural resources and protect ecosystems from destruction but due to the nature of aged and disabled people they fail to conserve energy by keeping the energy based applications unattended. Therefore, this project also aims at efficient resource utilization by detecting activities of elderly and disabled people.
The developed system has modules 1) The data acquired through initialized sensors are sampled and quantized. 2) It is then pre-processed in order to obtain the desired data. 3) The desired sensor data is obtained on the Bluetooth Master module through the master-slave configuration. 4) Features will be extracted from the sensors data. 5) Transfer of data to cloud (ThingSpeak). 6) By using machine learning algorithms activities are classified and recognized. 6) Label will be assigned to the recognized activity. 7) Energy conservation & efficient resource utilization. This system will ease and prolong the life of handicapped people by providing them secure health. Issues like privacy concerns and having to wear the sensors at all times will be eliminated in this proposed system.

In this project, we developed sensors platform to detect the human activities in an indoor evironment. The below figures shows various sensors installed in home environment.

We installed the Passive Infaredm sensors and an Ultrasonic sensors to detect the human movement in home environment. Weight sensors installed on chairs are used to detect the sitting and eating activities. The below diagram shows the proposed architecture. We used bluetooth to transfer the data to main controller and then using WiFi to send it the ThingSpeek Cloud. The hardware circuit diagram is:

Benefits of the Project- This project aim for facilitating the life of people, especially elderly and handicapped in the long term by monitoring their activities and making inferences about their daily routines.
- Furthermore health officers can be informed about the probable diseases in the long term and abnormal emergency situations in the short term.
- In this regard, it is obvious that these kinds of applications will ease the life of both elderly/handicapped and their relatives.
- Also, efficient resource utilization can conserve the earth’s natural resources and protect ecosystems from destruction
