Air Quality Monitoring System
Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject SummaryAir quality has a direct effect on the quality of life of millions of people over a vast geographic area. Air quality can vary widely on a day to day or even hourly basis. With rapid industrialization and urbanization coupled with extensive deforestation and climate change effects over the past few decades, there has been a dramatic increase in the levels of air pollution. Air pollution poses significant risks to both environment and health. It has been observed that an increase in air pollution directly correlates to an increase in hospital admission rates, and exacerbation of symptoms especially in the young and the elderly. These health problems have been a cause for concern and have resulted in an increased demand for air quality monitoring on a far larger and distributed scale than ever before.
At present, air quality monitoring stations are often confined to only a small number of locations due to the high cost of the monitoring equipment. They provide a low fidelity picture of the air quality in the city or region. Local variations and pockets with high densities of pollutants are overlooked. However, recent developments in low-cost sensor technology, wireless communication systems and the Internet of Things (IoT) provides an opportunity to use arrayed sensor networks to measure air quality, in real time, at a large number of locations.
With these problems and opportunities in view, we propose an air quality and weather monitoring system using networked, low-cost remote sensor nodes. This system is designed to provide an efficient, scalable and cost-effective solution to monitor air quality and weather parameters continuously and in real-time. Being a self-contained and fully integrated system, this will allow air quality monitoring nodes to be installed in a large variety of locations and enable low power communications over a dedicated IoT network.
Project Objectives-
- Demonstrate a scalable, low-cost system architecture for air quality and weather data collection, communication, storage in a centralised repository and onward distribution, disemination and presentation to ordinary users.
- Demonstrate the utility and viability of using low-cost sensor, communication and interfacing hardware for air quality and weather monitoring
- Bring air quality measurement within the realm of affordability and make wider access to this capability and data more possible and feasible
- Bring about more awareness among the general population about the implicit need of observing precautions against pollution and degraded air quality by providing an easy-to-use platform for viewing air quality information and recommended precautions.

Under the scope of this project, the primary objective is to develop a scalable and low-cost system to collect environmental information (air quality and weather) using multiple, geographically-distant sensor nodes and effectively communicate that information to a central node or server. The project aims to improve and increase access to up-to-date air quality and weather information in order to provide prompt health advisories to ordinary citizens and also facilitate effective anti-pollution and environmental policymaking, legislation, research and law enforcement.
