ABCD-AR (Augmented Reality) Learning Game for pre-school kids using PQRST (Preview, Question, Read, Self-recite, Test) Method
Project Area of Specialization Augmented and Virtual RealityProject SummaryABCD-AR (Augmented Reality) Learning Game for pre-school kids using PQRST (Preview, Question, Read, Self-recite, Test) Method is unique game using Augmented Reality technology for pre-school kids to learn. Traditional teaching methods are not engaging kids. They make learning a boring experience. Due to these teaching methods kids’ engagement for learning is dropping day by day. Kids are highly influenced by technology such as mobile devices. Therefore, use of technology in learning perspective will become a source of fun and excitement along with gaining knowledge. Through the technology of augmented reality, learning materials and knowledge can be visualized, and students can learn interactively with the virtual model in AR educational game. Augmented reality mobile game for pre-school learning, gives kids an interesting opportunity to learn alphabets.
Project ObjectivesObjectives for developing this game are:
- To add information and meaning to the real object especially when it is applied in kids’ education.
- To satisfy the learning of every kid in terms of incorporating with the technologies and added data that deepens their learning and memorizing power.
- To enhance the learning capability of the kids in terms of visual usage, listening to the audio commands, or different story context which makes learning more meaningful.
- To increase child’s creativity, AR supports creative learning, not only in finding their own creative source but improve children ability to explore and absorb new knowledge and solve problems in ‘creative’ way.
- To increase child’s motivation, AR technology can transform each class into a surprising learning environment that will keep students interested and motivated to participate and find out how their reality will be transformed during the lesson.
- To increase child’s intention and interactivity.
- To increase child’s responsibility, it also makes them more independent, the children learn how to be more independent and they face more self-responsibility in the learning progress during all years.
- To make a child’s fast learner. More engaged and motivated learners will always learn faster because their attention and energy is concentrated on the learning material throughout the learning process.
In this FYP, the target audience are pre-school kids. Therefore, the game-based learning model are introduced with the help of PQRST technique (preview, question, read, self-recite, test) to optimize kids’ reading and learning skills. Hence, in this FYP a proposed method is the Integration of AR technology with game-based learning model for pre-school kids. To implement a proposed solution, its divided into 5 components which are markers, database, Vuforia, API and AR modelling. Functions of this proposed model are reading, speaking, coloring, writing and quiz with checking the progress of multiple levels under the teachers and parents’ supervision.
Benefits of the Project“ABCD AR-Game” helps children to self-learn alphabets and evaluation of their knowledge. As kids are interesting in animations, images, surprises and AR game provide all of these. So, this Game will become an attention capturing source for kids because of which they learn and gain a lot of knowledge.
This game allows parents and teacher to supervise their kids and interact with each other through its creative interface. This game helps kids in learning pronunciation of letters (both small and capital), alphabet phonics, tracing and writing of alphabets (both small and capital letters) and colouring.
This game will prove an excellent tool for self-learning, enhancing creativity of kids, improving their attention span, interactivity and also their motivation for learning and producing technology aided solutions for different problems.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableI have started this AR Game project back in September' 2020 and it is planned to finish by 31st August 2021. This Game has 2 modes (1 for parents and their kids and the 2nd is for teachers). Parents can send unlocking level request to their teacher. Teachers will have right to accept and reject level unlocking request of parents. Kids can send screenshots of their activity sheets (of Colouring and Quiz categories) to their teachers, so teachers can evaluate creativity of kids and rate their creativity. So, this game is a sort of medium for interaction between kids, parents and teachers in an online setting.
ABCD-AR game has 5 playing categories (Read, Write, Speak, Colour, Quiz) with multiple sub-levels. Read category is for alphabet pronunciation (small and capital letters), Speak category is for alphabet phonics, Write category is to teach them how to write capital and small alphabets, Colour category is for improving their colouring creativity by bringing their 2d colour pages to life and Quiz category for evaluating kids writing skills.
