Weather data simulation and experimental calculations of heating and cooling loads
Project Area of Specialization Artificial IntelligenceProject SummaryWeather Data simulation and experimental calculations of heating and cooling loads, as the title suggests, a system is made to simulate the weather data and experimentally the heating and cooling loads are calculated. The Project's purpose is to test different building materials by simulating weather data of a specific place(Islamabad in this case) on those materials and calculating the heating and cooling loads associated with that material. The project used Peltier devices to simulate the temperature, and fans with heat sinks are used for heat transfer using convection. The primary purpose of making of this setup is to test and find the building material which consumes least amount of energy in a specific city/place. The project focuses on making the sustainable buildings using the most efficient building materials(for a particular city) such that the building needs least amount of energy to be maintained at thermal comfort zone temperature(25 degree C).
Project Objectives- The aim of this project is to simulate the weather effects on the external envelope(one of the walls) of a room and get experimental results for calculating the heating and cooling loads of the room
- To make a control logic for temperature control (weather simulation) and implement through a controller using Peltier devices.
The Project employs the use of Peltier devices for the temperature simulation. Working of the Project is as follows:
• The Weather Data of Islamabad of a complete year is converted into 12 days data,
based on the averages for each month’s temperature.
• This data is then fed in the MATLAB®, which is connected to the Arduino MEGA 2560 for the temperature simulation
• The Peltier devices with the heat sinks and fan are used to heat or cool depending on the temperature of 12 days data processed in the beginning of the process.
• The Readings of Temperature sensors placed in front of the Peltier devices assembly (includes Heat sinks with fan) and sensors placed in different parts of system are recorded.
• Finally the Heating and cooling loads are calculated using the ?T in MATLAB®.
• The Readings are recorded and used for the prediction of the right material which might be used to save the energy consumption in buildings.
The project has the following benefits:
- Experimental setup for simulating weather data
- Energy conservation by material testing for choosing the right building material for a particular place(in terms of least energy consumption to keep buildings within human comfort zone temperature).
- Experimental calculations of heating and cooling loads.
- Cost effective.
It is to be noted here that Pakistan is a country with very limited resources, the population is growing rapidly and in order to cater that population, more and more building are made without any knowledge of how the building material behaves(In terms of thermal comfort zone temperature, 25 C) for that particular area. This Project is the answer to this problem, an experimental setup that will show experimentally whether a particular material is feasible for that place or not, or which material is the most feasible in the given set of testing materials, which consumes least energy to keep it at thermal comfort zone temperature.
