Project Title

Wearable Heat Stroke Prevention Device

Project Area of Specialization Wearables and ImplantableProject Summary

With the surge in global warming throughout the decades, the surface temperature of earth has risen by 0.08 degrees (Celsius), which results in extremely hot weathers and the likelihood of heat strokes. This gave rise to the need for prevention of heat strokes, which we intent to achieve by the presented prototype of wearable heat stroke prevention device. This can not only be used for heat stroke prevention but also as a simple cooling cap for hot environment. The purpose of this study is to develop a temperature-controlled device which can be used to prevent heat strokes by the use of thermoelectric cooler (TEC).  Thermoelectric cooler (Peltier) is used to provide cooling effect by creating a temperature differential on each side of the plates. Arduino uno is used as a microcontroller and for temperature controlled cooling, temperature sensor DS18B20 is used. Concept designs are considered, shaped and assessed. The product is embedded in a wearable cap/helmet and the performance of the product is promising, sufficient and temperature-controlled cooling was achieved. Temperature sensing mechanism is successfully achieved. The weight of the cap is a big issue which can be resolved with design modification of the product. Overall, the cooling cap worked successfully on healthy individuals in a hot environment. It can be stated that this device will be a good investment as the climate is changing due to global warming; there will be a huge demand for this device. It will be popular especially for the worker class, including street vendors, labourers and public transport personnel. With further modifications regarding weightage, circuitry and size, the final product will be able to achieve the desired results more efficiently.

Project Objectives
  1. To design and model the device by keeping in mind human physiology.
  2. To construct temperature control system with the help of electrical components.
  3. To apply engineering knowledge to take action  against heat stroke.
  4. To promote human health and well being.
  5. To provide the means to reduce the impacts of global warming.
Project Implementation Method

This device consists of a temperature sensor (DS18B20), attached at the back of the ear as it is one of the sites to measure core body temperature. The output of the sensor is fed to the microcontroller at digital pin 8. This temperature value is then compared with a pre-set range of maximum temperature, 39 °C; which is the usual symptom of heat stroke under hot environments or excessive load-bearing activities. If the value of measured temperature is within the range (from 30 °C to 37 °C), the relay, which acts as a switch, will not turn on, hence no voltage is provided to the peltiers. In other words, no cooling occurs. If the value is above the range, the relay turns on, powering the peltiers which in turn causes cooling effect with the help of thermoelectric coolers. The peltiers are placed at three different locations to ensure maximum and rapid cooling performance. These cooling units keep operating until the temperature of the person comes back within the pre-set range of temperature defined in the coding. The peltiers are powered by a lithium-ion battery of 11.1v (Rechargeable) which is connected to the COM pin of relay. The peltiers are arranged in series, each getting 3.7V from the battery and are connected to the NO pin of relay. The Arduino is powered by a DC source as well. The changes in temperature are displayed on a 16x2 LCD display with contrast adjustment.
