Project Summary

According to the World Bank report, the availability of water in Pakistan was 5000 cubic meters per capita in 1950, but now it has dreadfully fallen to less than 1500 cubic meters per capita and will be less than 1000 cubic meters per capita in 2025.

As we know we have very limited resources to store water due to scarce resources of storing it, we emit water into the ocean during flood season. And when time comes for usage for example for cropping, we don’t even have enough water available. So that problem fascinated us to fix the wastage of water at every platform. The main focus of this project is to solve the major water and sanitation problems at domestic level. Some of the main problems which are intended to be solved using this project are: smart usage paradignms for water rather than conventional methods, helping the society to overcome health related issues and spreading the awareness about use of poor quality water and its effects and water scarcity problems in our country. The importance of using water is always at its peak bacause as we know that majority of the population don’t even know the diseases due to terrible water, people usually rely on maintaining diet where they want to healthy food and avoid sick atmosphere. But however, we don’t know the real culprut is none other one but the contaminated water itself.

The solution to keep people healthy and aware them from diseases due poor quality water is by providing them the deep analysis of water quality such as chlorination, pH and turbidity. These factors provide the basic info of whether the water is well enough to be consumed for living beings or not. Along with these health related problems, water wastage and leakage are also preeminent problems for our generation. For this solution, the project is designed in such a way that it provides the water usage analysis and shows the leakage of water along with its location through a tweet. The quantity analysis show how much litres a user has consumed of water for a specific period of time and it also provides a monthly basis graphical representation of water usage for the analysis and awareness of people. To avoid the futher wastage of water this project allows to control water motors manually and automatically from any location around the world. The automatic method provides the ease of use of water motors to turn ON & OFF automaticaly without emptying or overflowing the the water tank i.e it automatically refills the tank upon reaching certain limit and turn motor OFF when water has reached 90% level. This project is designed using Wireless Sensing Networks (WSN) & Internet of Things (IoT) technology and its all deployed system will be controlled and remotely monitored through a mobile phone app called WATER DOCTOR.

Project Objectives

The aim of this project is to design a Wireless Sensor Network (WSN) & IoT based project for advanced water management.

Our aim is to play our part to save our country from water-related problems such as water scarcity, wastage of water, and health issues due to water consumption without knowing its quality.

The objectives of our project are:

  1. To deploy a wireless sensor network using turbidity, ph, flowrate, chlorination and temperature sensor in water tanks. 
  2. To design a mobile phone App “Water Doctor” in order to control water motors and monitor the overall water management system.
  3. To measure and monitor the water quantity usage in liters.
  4. To detect, locate and notify the water leakage through any pipe.

By using Manual option, the user will remotely turn motors ON/OFF from any location. And by using Automatic function, the motors will be Automatically turn ON when the water level is low and turn OFF when the level has reached 90% level in order to stop the overflow of water.

Project Implementation Method

Implementation Method:

  1. The nodes containing the sensors (pH,Turbidity, Temperature, Water Flow Sensor, nRF24L01 Transceiver, Water Proof Ultrasonic Sensor) will be connected at their respected places. Like, quality sensors will be deployed in water, ultrasonic sensor will measure the level of water in tank, water flow sensor will measure the usage/utilization of water as well as find the leakage & show its leakage location.
  2. The sensors will collect the data and send it to the connected Arduino. This structure forms a node.
  3. Assuming there are three water tanks, one is underground & two are upper water tanks. The nodes connected at each tank will transmit the collected data to the master node using WSN technology over the wireless medium.
  4. The master node will collect all the data & will send it to the mobile application via internet using ESP8266 WiFi module.
  5. All the hardware system will be monitored & controlled through the App.

  • Water quantity measurements for domestic usage are prominent factors for the smart use of water. It also helps to ensure the availability of water in reservoirs and avoid leakage of water.
  • Water quality analysis can help to prevent diseases from poluted water & provides preeminent method for smart agriculture.
  • Smart farming  can be used to monitor and observe the fishes and their behavior using sensors deployed underwater.
  • Provides new paradigms and Smart prospective over conventional method.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The project is comprised of following stages.

D5.1- In 1st stage the sensors (ultrasonic sensor, pH sensor, Turbidity sensor, temperature sensor, Ultrasonic sensor & Water Flow sensor) will be deployed in each of three water tanks of Telecommunication Department which will be connected with arduinos.

D5.2- In 2nd stage the raw data collected from sensors will be analyzed in arduino and will be sent to the base station (arduino) forming a WSN network through nrf24l01 wireless transciever.

D5.3- In  3rd stage the base station is used to command the cluster (arduinos connected in the network) & send the collected data to a web portal through a wifi module.

D5.4- In 4th stage the web portal is a single platform at which monitoring and controlling are done through the admin.
