Waste water treatment using DCS

Project Area of Specialization

Electrical/Electronic Engineering

Project Summary

Since water is a basic Human need but due to the shortage of clean water on Earth, the demand of pure drinking water is increasing day by day. Thus, lack of water purification or recycling resources, especially in remote areas. Therefore, this research approaches a smart waste-water treatment plant.

Waste-water treatment is the process of removing contaminants from water and produce safe drinking water. The physical infrastructure used for waste-water treatment is called a "Waste-Water Treatment Plant" (WWTP). This system can be implemented in small as well as large industries. It basically reduces the human effort and increase the efficiency.

Smart waste-water treatment Plant using DCS”, where DCS (Distributed control system) is a computerized control system in a plant usually with many control loops, in which automated controllers are distributed all over the system whereas DCS allows plant to maintain and control processes that are distributed among various remote sites. Thus, DCS concept increases reliability and reduces maintenance and operational cost by localizing control functions near the process plant, with remote monitoring and supervision.

Project Objectives

  • To design a cost-effective wastewater treatment plant.
  • To continuously monitor the RO membrane efficiency and increase productivity.
  • To control and maintain the best suitable temperature, pressure, and flow rate of water in the plant.
  • To monitor the quality of product water.
  • To maintain TDS (Total Dissolved Solids) and PH % of the water at the output.

Project Implementation Method

  • The system consists of two parts.

    Automated System

    Command center

    1. Automated System

Automated system consists of a Diaphragm, Sediment filter, Carbon Activated Filter, 5-micron filter, RO membrane, water storage tanks and connections.

Moreover, Smart system  equipped with Data Acquisition Card (DAQ)  to acquire the real time data from the plant and further connected to DCS.

In this Water level, water flow rate, pressure and water quality will be monitored continuously to increase the efficiency of membrane  to maintain the required set points.

    2. Command Centre

Command center consists of Distributed Control System which utilizes LabVIEW  to display parameters graphically and to send specific command.

    .

Benefits of the Project

  • This project is to implement a cost-effective smart waste-water treatment plant using DCS to recycle the available water, remove contaminants (pollution or poisonous substance) in sewage & drainage(storm water) and convert into safe pure drinking water. Following are the main benefits:
  • 1.Automatic controlling of process
  • 2.Real time control
  • 3.Provides Flexibility and Simplicity

Technical Details of Final Deliverable
