Project Summary

Waste is a problem, which everyone on our planet must face. We all produce waste. This causes some serious pollution and greenhouse gas emission, which is contributing to our climate change and also losing a significant amount of material that could be used in new production. WasteHero is a basically waste recycling and social benefit project that operates an incentive-based scheme that collects recyclable materials from post consumers and in turn rewards them with “Points” which they can accumulate and use to get different deals and items offered through our "Trash se Cash" Store. The place of recycling in modern society is very important. In the recycling process for today, separation of waste with manpower must take place in order to make a series of large filters. It increases the efficiency of waste processing facilities and to identify non-recyclable wastes because the garbage separation process is very difficult to separate garbage with 100% accuracy. Waste Hero also provides its users up-to-date waste management and recycling news, policies and information. 

WasteHero is designed not only for environmental benefits but also for saving time and manpower. It is to develop an automated system that is able to sort the waste and this system can take a short time to sort the waste, and it will be more accurate in sorting than the manual way. With the system in place, the beneficial separated waste can still be recycled and converted to energy and fuel for the growth of the economy

Project Objectives

Some objectives of Waste Hero are enlisted below: 

  • To drive the change in waste management, by sorting the waste in the specified category it belongs.
  • To collect the recyclable materials for further reprocessing into new production raw materials
  • To improve profitability and efficiency within the industry by automatically sorting of waste.
  • To handle community sensitization on proper waste disposal, recycling, and environmental sustainability.
  • To optimize the current methods for waste management through the classification of waste.
  • WasteHero will offer optimization and full-service management of waste, which reduces costs and benefits the environment.
  • Decrease overall waste generation by implementing continuous efforts, such as recycling
  • To up-to-date, it’s User about waste management and recycling news, policies and information. 

In WasteHero, we want to reduce the environmental, financial and health impact that waste has on our society. Our aim is to make this a front-runner in waste and recycling management. We are thrilled to participate in the development and transformation of the industry. We aim to continuously follow the development and maturity of the technologies to further develop the best solutions for efficient waste management and a greener tomorrow. We want to motivate post-consumers to recycle by creating value from their everyday waste. WasteHero is a technology-driven project focused upon optimizing waste management. We believe the future of handling waste should be managed in a sustainable way, which benefits both organizations and cities.

Project Implementation Method

We are using an agile methodology to develop WasteHero. It advocates adaptive planning, evolutionary development, early delivery, and continual improvement, and it encourages rapid and flexible response to change.

Feature-driven development methodology

  • Develop an Overall Model.
  • Build a Features List.
  • Plan by Feature.
  • For each property – Build and Design by Feature.

Components of our system are,

    • Development of this cross-platform app.
    • Development of “Trash se Cash” Store
    • A component to scan different products
    • A Raspberry Pi module and a camera
    • Image recognition to distinguish and sort items.

For Implementation of Project, some of the hardware requirements are Arduino/Raspberry Pi, Camera Module. TrashBin and some software requirement Anaconda, Visio, Visual Studio 2019  and Visual Code

Benefits of the Project

Climate Change is considered one of the biggest challenges being faced by the world today and no country including Pakistan is an exception to it. One cause of which is Solid Waste. Solid waste is any solid material that is discarded by its owner, user or producer. In Pakistan, the absence of a proper solid waste disposal system and a huge amount of uncollected wastes possess a great threat to public health as they are the source of mosquitoes and flies which transmit malaria and cholera. One of the very hazardous and un-noticed drawbacks of the waste disposal in Pakistan is that hospital and industrial waste is treated as ordinary waste. Only 50 percent of solid waste quantities generated is collected by government services. Because of the lack of adequate disposal sites, much of the collected waste finds its way in dumping grounds, open pits, ponds, rivers, and agricultural lands. The estimated quantity of solid waste generation in Pakistan ranges between 0.283 to 0.612 kg/capita/day and the waste generation growth rate is 2.4 percent per year. Due to poor solid waste management, there is a large number of communicable diseases and an unhygienic environment being created. The present way of separating waste/garbage is the hand-picking method, whereby someone is employed to separate out the different objects/materials. The person, who separate waste, is prone to diseases due to the harmful substances in the garbage. In separating the recyclable waste from the non-disposable, it becomes cheaper for the waste management companies to take options like landfilling and incineration where they can take profits up 70% rather than taking small profits when they opt to recycle.

It will improve profitability and efficiency within the industry. It will handle community sensitization on proper waste disposal, recycling, and environmental sustainability. It will optimize the current methods for waste management.WasteHero will offer optimization and full-service management of waste, which reduces costs and benefits the environment.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

WasteHero equipped with a camera uses image recognition to distinguish and sort items. It works by using a Raspberry Pi module equipped with a camera to “see” each item placed on top of the can’s rotating top. It will be able to distinguish items and rotate the top accordingly to drop them into the correct areas of a partitioned can. We will perform comparative analysis for the classification of images in the Trash data set to classify the category of Waste.

Our model is an incentive “Point-Based” collection program that allocates “Points” to the number of recyclable items neatly collected at the point of disposal by post-consumers who in turn use the earned “Points” to redeem numerous identified items and services. Recyclers get an SMS notification at the end of the week on the number of “Points” gained. Thereafter, the “Points” gained could be traded in exchange for equivalent tagged items available at our “Trash se Cash ” Store. We also award bonus points for any environmentally friendly activity we promote or encourage. Potential Recyclers register to join the “Trash se Cash” Store and earn points from various identified recycling activities.
