Project Summary

Using Virtual Reality (VR) as a tool for training is becoming increasingly popular. VR is an immersive digital space where users can interact with objects and navigate as if they are present in a real environment. This is a game which requires users to interact by moving and responding to incoming stimuli. Users are immersed in a competitive game of table tennis against an AI opponent, to which official table tennis rules apply.

The difficulty of the AI ranged across five levels from amateur to legendary, ascending in order of difficulty. An increase in difficulty is related to an increase in the speed of serve and return, number of serve/return placements and spin on the ball from the AI. The game utilised haptic, auditory and performance feedback to simulate a real-world environment. For example, when the simulated bat hit the ball users felt a vibration and, realistic sounds were played. Sounds were also used to signal a won or lost point while a scoreboard was also available.

Player use their hand as racket to reflect the virtual ball. Player can move their hand to manipulate their own virtual paddles so that they can hit the ball back and forth. In order to show the proposed game system is efficient, we implement the proposed system in an application on Android platform.

Project Implementation Method

• Development of Virtual Atmosphere by using Unity 3D with the help of hardware.
• Leap Motion has a built-in motion process and it is also used to movement and gesture control.
• VR Glasses With the use of VR glasses we display and play the game while wearing the glasses on our eyes. All the environment is seen where the user plays the  game.
• With the use of hand gesture, we move the hand by X, Y, Z axis and place the action in the game. Hand gesture is used in the game to hit back the ball.
• With the use of VR glasses, we display and play the game while wearing the glasses on our eyes. All the environment is seen where the user plays the game.
• The Bluetooth or Wi-Fi module helps us to sending the action in the game.
• A game will be seen in the VR glasses through mobile or Laptop screen and Bluetooth or Wi-Fi module will send the action from hand gesture through Mobile game or laptop game.

VR Ping Pong can transport you into an entirely new world where you can experience new things. It offers highly- interactive 3D visuals which seem like a real world experience. You can experience all those things which seem surreal in the real world.

This game is a great way to shed some calories as some games requires more physical activity during the game play.

Traditional gaming means sitting in front of screen for hours whereas in VR gaming, the whole gaming experience appears realistic and engaging. In traditional gaming, you won’t be able to have a dynamic gaming experience. Investing in a good VR device can make your experience remarkable. VR gaming experience can take you beyond the screen.

In many researches it has been proved that VR gaming helps in improving condition of kids who are not much expressive. Virtual reality gaming helps them in creating their own virtual world where everything is under their control. The whole gaming experience can elevate their confidence & sense of pride.

Virtual reality gaming has revolutionized the whole gaming experience of the contemporary gamers. Thrilling VR games are highly engaging and result in boosting adrenaline. Rapid advancement in virtual reality technology has induced great progress in the world of gaming.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

It is a hardware-based gaming project. To develop this project, we are using hand gesture for the movement and VR glasses for display. In the hand gesture control, we use Leap motion sensor for the control and the movement of the hand. The Leap Motion controller is a sensor device that aims to translate hand movements into computer commands. The controller itself is an eight by Three-centimeter unit that plugs into the USB on a computer the software which we used for the gaming coding is Unity. Unity is a multipurpose game engine that supports 2D and 3D graphics of the game. Unity can be used to create 3D visualizations such as still images, video, and real time interactive video games. Blender is a cross-platform application, running on Linux, mac OS, and MS-Windows systems.
