Research on an Urdu Text-to-Speech system is going to be carried out in this project. Our application is a GUI based interactive system which would help the user to listen to the content in Urdu language. As we are living in Pakistan, Urdu is of great importance. As not much work is done on the Urdu language processing, we decided to build a prototypical application which will be capable of converting Urdu Text into Speech form. As we are moving to 2021 everyone deserves an equal opportunity in this era irrespective of their disability. Anyone who is blind will be able to hear any written text in Urdu Language.

The user will be provided with two input options:

1. Input your own text.
2. Text from Internet by which data will be entered into the system which will then be converted into voice form.

Project Objectives

1. To design and implement a Text-to-Speech System for Urdu language.
2. Investigate various frameworks to choose the best option for the Urdu language.
3. Other than normal users, this framework is particularly useful for visually impaired people.
4. Our App will present the given information in optimal format.
5. People can listen to Urdu Text in Speech form.

Project Implementation Method

Technologies to be used

• Text-to-Speech system development using an API.
• User friendly interface in Java eclipse.
• Text-to-Speech System using Python, HTML, CSS, JavaScript and Java Language Toolkits.

Research Aspects

• Training and Testing a Text-to-Speech system for Urdu language using Urdu Speech Corpus having Transcribed Text for each Audio File.
• Integrating the TTS system into a GUI based application.

Our system has two main features which are:

• Text Features.
• Speech Features.

• Text Features

There is following features for text in our app.

1. Text Field

Our app will have text Field that can take Urdu as an input.

1. Paste and Write Option

User can paste text into text field. User can write text in the field.

1. Conversion

By clicking on convert option, the text in the text field will be converted into speech.

• Speech Features

After conversion of text into speech we can find that speech with following features.

1. Voice Control Features

That generated sound can be controlled like control the pitch of sound, speed and time of sound, control pausing and rewinding of sound.

1. Play and Download Option

We can download and play the sound.

• Urdu TTS gives access to your content to those with literacy difficulties, learning disabilities, reduced vision and those learning a language.
• It also open doors for anyone looking for easier ways to access digital content.
• Text to speech can turn any digital content into a multimedia experience and people can listen to a news or blog article, a PDF document, or an e-book very easily with very high accuracy rate.
• Some people are auditory learners. This Urdu TTS System will contribute as a learning aid.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

We will deliver app which will take urdu text and will convert that text to speech. We will use Tacotron to generate speech, and run deep neural networks algorithms on our project.

Modules to be built

• Text-to-Speech Converter for Urdu Language

Preparing the data and building a converter.  The task involves defining the scope, training, tuning and testing of the system for conversion of Text into Speech form.

• Text Analyzer

Learn and use the toolkit/API to build TTS System for the applications. Major tasks involved are defining the scope, conversion, training and testing.

• Interface design

Interface of the whole project will be implemented in Java. It will be paragraph level / sentence level / Word level conversion.
