Logistics tend to be key parts of many businesses. While logistics may not be an issue for businesses and firms that operate at the large scale, it certainly poses issue for those that are stiff in terms of resources, especially households.

The objectives and methodology to go about making the project are as follows.

1. The user should be able to book a truck through the website. 

2. The system must be able to suggest vehicles that are the most suitable for their use according to the weight/loads provided.

3. The website must support both intercity and intracity booking, and therefore, must be able to schedule and manage intercity travels of heavier trucks within the system.

4. In intracity booking, the system must show the real time location of the truck.

There is already work being done in digitalizing the transport and logistics industry. However, most of the work has been done in car booking, bus booking and plane tickets booking. The work being done in the logistics industry is unique in terms of underlying business logic. While many bus booking and cab booking website run on the same business logic, we cannot say the same about the truck booking website.

The background and motivation for this project arose exactly from the limits of the website already in business.

Our model of business can be equated to that of a cab booking service, but with added functionality, for example: intelligently (does not imply AI) suggesting the vehicle type for a particular weight limit. Also, as the website will solve the problem of localization of service, the website might be a hybrid of a car booking website and a regulation bus booking website.

The conduct of the project will be gradual, over the span of 26 weeks. There are 22 tasks divided amongst the 2 group members according to the module assigned to them. The modules are as followed:

  3. Database and API

Project Objectives
  1. Provide online facility for truck booking.

  2. Freedom for luggage transfer both intercity and intracity.

  3. Tracking of loaded luggage.

  4. Easy luggage booking for truck drivers as well as customers

Project Implementation Method

Customers can login and sign up. They can also book intercity and intracity rides in three steps. Customers should be able to view their ride history. Customers should be able to change their account settings.

Drivers will be notified whenever a customer books a ride nearby. A driver can also change his current vehicle if he has more than one vehicle. A driver has a liberty to accept or reject a ride. A driver can edit his personal and vehicle settings.

The frontend will be developed on React framework. We will use Material UI and Bootstrap libraries for designing.

The backend will be developed on node.js using Express server. We will also use packages such as Bcrypt for hashing passwords and Java-Caller to run java programs in server.

We use MySQL server and MySQL workbench client to manage database.

Benefits of the Project

The purpose of this logistic service is to provide Luggage transportation across country. Only category truck will be allowed to be registered in our system, not carry van or any other small vehicles. Both intracity and intercity facility will be available in our system. Truck drivers will show pickup and drop-down location in inter-city facility and its time. User will be able to see on the dashboard all the trucks along with their pickup/delivery points and timings. User will also be able to search vehicles by date or pickup/delivery Points. User will be able to get luggage pickup from his/her home in intracity transfer of luggage. For intercity transport, user will be responsible for luggage transport till pickup point. Multiple users will be able to book a single truck as per truck load capacity in intercity transport. During the project period, we will not add any other payment methods and OTP verifications.
