Project Summary

Indoor navigation is a process through which users can navigate from one location to another where GPS and other satellite technologies fail entirely. Track InWay will provide a solution for indoor navigation so that indoor locations can be tracked or your route to a specific destination can be navigated, which is not possible with GPS. The app will be implemented based on the challenges of indoor navigation in a university that visitors, students, and administration face at the university.

The first feature will provide users with 2D maps and AR routes that enable students and visitors to reach the destination of their choice. 

Another problem students and visitors face is filling out forms and understanding paperwork. As a result, our app will provide a procedural navigation feature that will guide you through the step-by-step navigation process with the appropriate sample documentation to complete the procedure. When the student wants to complete the procedure of Summer Session, Winter Session, Scholarship, etc., the app will provide complete guidance along with a sample form through Augmented Reality (AR) with a step-by-step procedure

Track InWay will have a teacher tracking feature, which allows administration staff to track faculty members via Bluetooth beacons. 

The app has an additional feature that will provide class or lab details along with their schedules. Users will scan a specific class or lab using our application and get all the information about the specific class or lab via AR.

The “Track InWay” project will meet the following objectives:

  • Providing indoor navigation through AR and 2D maps at Jinnah University for Women will allow users to navigate from one indoor location to another.
  • Provide procedural navigation that will guide you step by step to complete any work process with sample documentation.
  • Assisting management in locating teachers' current location.
  • Students will be able to find information about a specific class or lab and their availability by scanning the name of the class or lab.

Project Implementation Method

The project, Track InWay will be implemented in our university that will provide indoor navigation to visitors, students and staff through AR. We will be creating an indoor environment for university departments, which will be shown in our mobile application via a 2D map.
Our app will have 4 main features. The first feature is indoor navigation that will take the user from one place to another within the university campus. This feature will be implemented via AR and 2D maps using the Unity 3D tool.

In the teachers' tracking feature, we will be using Bluetooth beacons to track a teacher's current location by placing them at different spots in our university, which will be then further connected to our mobile. 

In the procedure feature, we will be providing step-by-step procedural navigation through AR. When an individual will select a particular procedure like scholarship form, summer form, etc, the step-by-step guide and sample form will be provided through our app. When a picture of a particular form is scanned, the sample form will be displayed and the documents required will be shown through AR. We will be saving all the information regarding each form in our database so that whenever it is scanned, all the requirements will be shown onwards. 

In our last feature, the lab info feature, when the picture of a class or lab is scanned, it will display all its current information like class or lab availability time, how many PCs are available, and which software is available in the labs. All this will be done through saved information in a database about each lab/class, so whenever scanned, all current details will be displayed using AR.

The tools and technology we are using in this project are as follow:

  • Unity and Vuforia tools will be used to create the virtual environment.
  • HTML, CSS, PHP, JavaScript for website development. Android Studio to create our mobile application and Bluetooth beacons for tracking staff's current location.

Benefits of the Project

•    Users can locate and follow the route using 2D maps that move from one place to another within the university.
•    Track InWay will guide the user to reach their target destination through AR.
•    Visitors will have a comprehensive guide to completing their specific activities on campus with the help of procedural navigation. As a result our app, Track InWay will provide a pre-filled sample form as well as a list of required documents to individuals who are experiencing difficulty filling out the form and provide step by step navigation process to help students to submit the form.
•    Track InWay will provide the availability and the details of the class or lab. When students will scan the class/lab then the current information about that class or lab will be displayed, saving time and effort for students.
•    The application will assist the administrator in tracking the present location of faculty members.
