Project Title

Traceability of pesticides and fertilizers using IoT & Blockchain Technology

Project Area of Specialization BlockchainProject Summary

This was observed that fake pesticides and fertilizers have a negative effect, and they pose a significant risk to farmers, consumers, and the environment as they cause low yields. Furthermore, these products were also found extremely dangerous for farmers' health as well as they also damaged soil fertility. This has been concluded well from several sources that the fake pesticides and fertilizers have severed direct impact on production, quality, and as well as also cut down the farmers revenue.

To address above said issues we have aimed to design and develop a trusted blockchain and IoT based traceability solution for pesticides and fertilizer. This framework will ensure the genuineness of pesticides and fertilizer from manufacturer to consumer. In the suggested project we will develop an intelligent App. to track down fake pesticides and fertilizers. The NFC tags are planted in the pesticide bottles and fertilizers bags. The EPC code of the product and other information will be stored in these NFC Tags. The Farmers will scan the NFC tag through the mobile app and then will get complete backtracked information about the product, which will be stored on the blockchain. In short, the farmer will get the complete history of the product from the manufacturer to the retailer. Through this consumers will get the complete traceability information of the product. This traceability information will prove the product is either original or fake.

Project Objectives
  1. Designing and developing low-cost product traceability solutions to counter fake pesticides and fertilizers by using high-end technologies like Blockchain and IoT.
  2. The development of a highly sophisticated Android App for the stakeholders (i.e., manufacturer, distributors, retailers, and farmers) to track down the pesticides and fertilizers from manufacturer to retailer.
Project Implementation Method

In this project, we will develop a private blockchain-based framework. This private blockchain-based framework will be developed based on the modules provided by Hyperledger Fabric. This blockchain-based framework will facilitate all stakeholders in the pesticides and fertilizers supply chain to have a complete picture regarding the traceability of these two products from the manufacturer to the consumer. The Jetson Nano Developer Kit B01 - 4GB will be utilized in this project for the installation of the blockchain (Hyperledger Fabric). In this project, the GSM-GPRS Sim 900 shield development board will be used as well. In which the NFC readers and writers will be connected to GSM and GPRS will be used for remote connectivity.

Here in our project, we will use Node.js API. The Hyperledger fabric provides an API called fabric-client API, which can be used to execute operations and transactions in blockchain networks. This API can be used to enroll the users of the blockchain network, execute the chain code transactions, and connect to the network channel. For each participant in the system, they execute the chain code using different API services.

Our proposed solution will focus on the usage of smart contracts (i.e., Chain Code) executed autonomously on the Hyperledger Fabric blockchain platform. The execution of the smart contract functions and code will validate the transactions and stored them on the ledger. In the proposed blockchain solution, the smart contracts will receive transactions in form of function calls and will also trigger events to enable the participating entities to continuously monitor, track and get suitable alerts when violations occur. Our suggested solution will be based on blockchain and IoT technologies. This solution may ensure the genuineness of pesticides and fertilizers from manufacturer to consumer. This will be achieved by integrating NFC tags with pesticides bottles and fertilizer bags while automating the transaction process among different stakeholders by using smart contracts on a private blockchain. This solution will facilitate the stakeholders by providing transparency and traceability in the supply chain of pesticides and fertilizer.

Benefits of the Project Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The highly sophisticated Blockchain and IoT-based products traceability framework will be provided, which will assure the genuineness of the pesticides and fertilizers. The NFC (Near Field Communication) as a key technology will be integrated with the pesticide bottles and fertilizers bags. In the NFC-enabled supply chain, an EPC (Electronic Product Code) will be assigned to each product and will be written into an NFC tag. Such tag-attached products will be shipped from manufacturers to the supply chain partners. During the transportation process, each involved stakeholder will interrogate NFC tags and they will add extra evidence data to the tags. In this way, the next party will be able to check whether or not the products have passed through the legitimate supply chain. If any change is found, such products may be considered fake. Beginning with the transaction of pesticides and fertilizers sold among the stakeholders, all transactions are stored on the blockchain through smart contracts. With blockchain, all the transactional information cannot be altered or tampered with and is immediately available and accessible by all stakeholders in a trusted and decentralized manner, with no intermediaries. Furthermore, a highly sophisticated Android App. will be delivered that will allow the farmer to scan the NFC tag and will get the detailed traceability information of the product (pesticide and fertilizer) along the supply chain from manufacturer to retailer.
