This project offers a vast area of learning and solution of a variety of different complexities of the energy metering domain.
Proposed target of this project is providing a simple and user friendly solution to the energy metering difficulties that occur on the consumer end and designing a secure and reliable system that offers a solution to the utility to keep a proper check and balance of the units that are being consumed by customer.
The introduction of the Prepaid System in the metering design provides a solution towards the eradication of energy theft and the possibility of any sort of human error. Secondly, this project aims towards the construction of such system that provide Real Time Monitoring and Energy Economical system. The project allows the consumer to manage the active loads through their smart phone via mobile application resulting in the economical usage and efficient consumption of electricity. Also, the embedding of GSM module in the energy metering system allows the consumer as well as the utility of the monitor the real time parameters such as voltage, current, power and units consumed.
Construction of the project is divided into different stages which includes the designing and fabrication of a 3 phase digital energy meter, interfacing the GSM module, the construction of mobile application and the allowing the consumer and utility to monitor and control the load using that application
Project ObjectivesThe problems and irregularities that the consumer and the utility are commonly facing using the conventional and traditional energy meter are discussed and their solutions are set as the main objectives and targets for the project. These objectives can be described as:
Pre – paid system is introduced in order to obtain the complete recovery of the units consumed by the customer and this eventually results as the solution of energy theft.
Economical and efficient usage of electricity is also a main objective and for that a digital application is adopted which will update the consumer with the real time parameters of energy along with the amount of units that have already been consumed by the customer.
Pre – paid system also rectifies the chances of human error while the recording of meter reading by the employee of the utility as the payment of the units purchased is done before hand.
In the conventional bill payment systems, the consumer has to wait in long queues but here in a pre – paid system there is no possible due date as the payment for the energy consumed can be done merely by using the digital application.
The load management system results in the economical usage of electricity as any particular load can be remotely switched off by using the digital application.
The main scope of the project can be classified into 4 major aspects which are being covered. These aspects are described as follows:
The measurement and calculation of energy parameters such as voltage and current along with the calculation of units being consumed over the period of time.
Interfacing of pre – paid system using a GSM module.
A digital application that will act as a complete control system for the observation of real time energy parameter and the access to control the power flow to a load remotely.
A smart energy monitoring and controlling system that ensure the economical usage of electricity using the load management algorithm.
The main significance to work on this research of smart meter is that this is beneficial for both utility and consumer. This prepaid smart energy meter will help in value the customer by giving them knowledge about their consumption. Customer will have knowledge of the energy usage and control it.
Utility:
The benefit to utility of using three phase pre-paid energy meter to minimize the losses which are done by theft. Advance payment is always favorable in terms of utility.
Consumer:
On the consumer end, the benefit of this project will be that the consumer will always have a knowledge regarding the load and the units consumed so that the consumer will never receive a huge amount in the form of an unexpected bill. Moreover, this will push the consumer for economical usage of electricity.
Designing and the construction of a digital three phase energy meter was aimed as the main task to be completed till mid year which was successfully achieved along with the calculation of energy parameters and also the calculation for the unit being consumed has been successfully completed. The readings of the energy parameters being calculated by the energy meter has been tested and calibrated accordingly.
The task completed till mid year are:
Data Collection and Integration.
Preliminary test to verify the working of current and voltage sensing unit.
Construction of Three Phase Energy Meter.
The task mentioned were supposed to be completed till mid year out of which all have been completed successfully.
The final project is aimed to fulfill these following 5 deliverables and these deliverables are set as objectives:
Construction of a digital 3 phase energy meter.
Calculation of the energy parameters (Voltage, Current, Power and Units Consumed) using the energy meter.
Imbedding a GSM Module along with the energy meter.
Making the energy meter pre-paid by the use of pre-payment system for the units.
Interfacing the energy meter with a data cloud in order to provide access of the data being measured by the energy meter to the utility as well as the consumer.
Designing of a digital application that shows the instantaneous values of the energy parameters that are being measured by the energy meter to the consumer.
Construction of a load management system in order to provide remote access to the consumer to shut off a load using the digital application
