Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject SummaryAs the title suggests, the project will be composed of a meter which will measure current, voltage, power, power factor and some other parameters. These parameters will then be wirelessly transmitted to a server and from there, these parameters will be uploaded on a website and an android application. The data will be accessible by the user and the power company.
Project ObjectivesThe project is for the industrial use. In this project, we are aiming for a device through which electrical quantities like current, voltage etc. and units being consumed by various users can be monitored from a remote place. Such a device, if further worked on it, will improve the power sector of Pakistan in numerous ways. For example, electricity thefts can be controlled, instead of load shedding, the price of a unit can be increased or decreased to control the electricity being consumed by the users, etc.
Project Implementation MethodLeads from all the three phases from the Low Voltage (LV) side of the distribution transformer will be be fed into the circuit. Passing through the Current Transformers (CT) and potential dividers, these leads will bde connected to ADE7758 IC. This IC will calculate current, voltage and energy. This IC on the other side will be connectred to a micro controller which will perform SPI communication with the IC to get these parameters. Once these parameters have reached the micro controller, other parameters like the power factor, Total Harmonic Distortion (THD), etc. will be calculated by the microcontroller. The microcontroller will also generate waveforms. After the calculation of all the required parameters and generation of the waveforms, all the data will be transmitted wirelessly to the server via GSM module. The server will upload all the received data on a website and an android application. This data will also be stored in a database. The data will be accessible by the user through some login ID and also by someone who is monitoring the power flow in the area.
Benefits of the ProjectFollowing are some of the many benefits of the project:
- All the electrical parameters of different distribution transformers can be monitored from a remote place.
- Power being consumed by different users can be monitored from a remote place.
- Electricity thefts can be detected.
- The users will be able to know the units they have consumed in a particulatr month and thus estimate their electricity bill.
- Power companies will not have to go door to door to get the meter readings.
The final deliverables of the project comprise a hardware product; including microcontroller and a software portion. The hardware module is aimed to be user-friendly and easily installable for monitoring. This hardware module will also be capable of sending the data wirelessly over a network to the central server. The software portion will be deployed on a website, over the internet, which will be capable of accessing data from the central server.
