Teaching Active English to Kids Through VR
Virtual reality (VR) is a technology that allows a user to interact with a computer-simulated environment, whether that environment is a simulation of the real world or an imaginary world. It could range from creating a video game to having a virtual stroll around the universe. Although your surroundings do not physically exist whilst wearing a VR headset, the experience is so immersive that it certainly feels as though your surroundings are real. Virtual reality headsets typically come in the form of a thick pair of goggles connected to a computer with a set of controllers that allow the user to carry out actions. With a VR headset, we will also use a Leap Motion controller it is a small device that connects with a PC using an infrared scanner and sensor to map and track the human hand. There was a time when parents, in desperate need of soothing their child, would take out a favorite toy, rattle, or book from their bags. Nowadays, they only have one solution to placate their child with a mobile phone. That’s why In Pakistan the usage of mobile is increasing day by day among kids. And with the recent series of lockdowns across the world, many schools, colleges, and universities have faced closures. The pandemic has forced us to adapt and change our lifestyle and the way that we study and learn. However, one of the biggest struggles that students have faced is the lack of interaction with learning materials and objects. This VR app will provide a creative learning environment to learn the English language in a productive manner with an immersive experience that would otherwise not be possible. Hence, they would be able to learn, enjoy and have fun at the same time. In this VR application, we have different immersive environments that will have many different 3d objects the kid can pick and drag these objects with the help of a leap motion controller that manipulates digital objects with a hand motion. Training will be done on kids by visiting different schools and making them wear VR headsets and will teach them how to interact with these immersive environments.
As screen timing of kids has been increasing day by day so why not this time should be used in a productive way. Our aim is to develop an ICT-based solution for helping kids for attaining English language literacy, so a VR solution is developed in this project to learn the different real-world objects and Basic English sentences relevant to these objects that we use in our daily life. This app will provide a learning environment to learn the English language in a fun and creative way. Hence, they would be able to learn, enjoy and have fun at the same time. With virtual reality, we can experience the most intimidating situations by playing safe and with a learning perspective.
It is VR mobile-based application, it uses the following:
· Creating VR scenes (the 3D scene is a virtual environment with which a kid will interact) by using unity 3D.
· Installing libraries for VR template and Leap Motion Controller. There is also a built-in plugin in Unity 3D for leap motion. Interaction with a 3D object can be done by using a leaping character (e.g. leap floating hand character) and giving a function character with the 3D object.
· Creating 3D models (represent a physical body or shape made from a collection of points in a 3D scene) using 3Ds Max and displaying text with audio after interaction with the 3D object.
The final product is a mobile VR app. A virtual scenario is created for a better look and feel for kids. Also, for better interactivity, a leap motion controller can be used which makes kids easy to interact with objects without complications of interactivity for laymen such as keyboard and game controller, etc. The kid will be able to see his hands in scenarios and interact with 3D objects using leap motion as a result text displays and sound produces through which the kid will know what object it is. The kid chooses the scenario according to his liking. After the selection of the scenario, that scenario opens and loads the 3D objects. The kid interacts with the 3D object by hands visible in scenarios that are controlled by a leap motion controller.
