For a country with the population of more than 220 million, Pakistan has its share of people that cannot climb staircases due to old age, arthritis, physically challenged & injury or damage to limbs. Hence, installation of elevators or escalators is considered but that is generally not possible or feasible in homes, clinics and small buildings. Hence Stairlift provides an effective, low cost solution to tackle this problem for handicapped & elderly population of Pakistan. A stairlift is a mechanical device that is used to move up and down the stairs while sitting on a chair. It consists of a chair mounted on a motor that is attached to a rail placed on the staircase. It can be used to take people as well as goods across the stairs. Our main aim is to design and build a stairlift for curved tracks using rack and pinion mechanism with the capability to lift 120kg of load up and down the stairs while keeping the chair parallel to the ground. Also, implementation of cradle charging and obstacle detection on stairs is part of our deliverables.

Project Objectives

1. Project capable of lifting 120kg of mass.

2. Self balancing chair with help of guiding rails.

3. Cradle charging whenever stairlift comes to rest.

4. Obstacle detection on stairs.

5. Customizable according to the stairs.

Project Implementation Method

The stairlift is going to be installed upon a portable staircase. The rack & pinion and guiding rails will be mounted on the ground beside the railing of the stairs, not attached with it. The motor will be placed beneath the chair and is capable of driving the chair with the help of rack and pinion system whereas the guiding rails will make sure the seat remains parallel to the ground. All of the manufacturing is being done in Gujranwala whereas the motor and seat will be purchased. 

Benefits of the Project

Our project helps people that are disabled, injured, orthopedic and elderly people that have difficulty moving up and down the stairs. There are multiple stairlift companies present internationally but they have no official presence in Pakistan. There are a couple of importers but they import chinese stairlifts and give no warrenty. Our project is way too cheaper than the international competitors and is being manufactured locally.

1. 24V 50A Dry Battery

2. 24V DC Motor with 50rpm and 700Watt

3. Double pole double throw switches for motor driving

4. Limit Switch for obstacle detection

5. Angle of inlination for stairlift is 40 Degrees
