Project Summary

(BCI) as the name suggests is a mode of communication made possible by translating the brain's electrical activity into commands for the computer hence eliminating the dependency of neuromuscular activity which is needed otherwise.
This project focuses on designing of GUI communication tool for paralyzed patients who cannot express their thoughts and feeling with speech. There are multiple types of brain data. This project will use steady-state visual evoked potential (SSVEP) electroencephalogram (EEG) signals. SSVEP will be extracted from raw EEG data obtained from the brain. The SSVEP signals would differentiate the focus point of the user's gaze by extracting the frequency components of the signals captured with EEG. Canonical Correlation Analysis (CCA) will be used for the identification of the user's desired command. It will be integrated with GUI with a flickering screen. After CCA a command will be generated via a computer program to select the desired function.

Project Objectives

  • To create a brain-computer interface that enables the person suffering from Quadriplegia to communicate
  • To implement SSVEP based BCI with the development of BCI communicator application that allows paralyzed people to type words.

Project Implementation Method

I. Acquisition of raw EEG Signals.
II. Application of signal processing techniques to get desired SSVEP signals and elimination of artifacts.
III. Integrating these signals with programming for the selection of desired commands.
IV. Compiling all work in form of a user-friendly graphical interface.

Benefits of the Project

There are over 10 million people in Pakistan and among which about 5% of Pakistan's population are suffering from paralysis and cannot move around or even write or talk. The proposed project would help physically challenged people to control a computer and communicate with others through their visual focus. This project aims to use BCI which will help them to communicate by just looking at the laptop screen.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

  • A Brain-Computer Interface capable of selecting four different command options on the screen.
  • The user would focus on one of the four frequencies on the screen, each of which would be associated with one command.
  • Based on the user's focus point the command would be selected and displayed through GUI. Each selected command corresponds to a specific frequency generated in the brain.
