SOT Smart Spectacles using machine learning
Project Area of Specialization Wearables and ImplantableProject SummarySmart Glasses fall into the latest trend in wearable technology. There are many different companies worked on the development of Smart Glasses with different strategies. It enable processing information using internal components which is then displayed in front of the user. Often times, there is also connectivity to the internet for real-time assistance and application use. It’s features and applications are broad and can be used in security, healthcare, media applications. We are seeing the effort by many companies to come up innovative solutions by using wearable tech. SOT Smart Spectacles is a spectacle-based computing operated directly through your eyes rather than hand held device. SOT Smart glasses are wearable device that display real-time information directly in front of user’s field of vision by using Augmented Reality (AR) techniques. The glasses use LCD display technology to overlay information onto the real world. With glasses camera and by using face recognition techniques the glasses can recognize faces which will be useful for half blind people and for taking photos & Spectacles paired with the app and Spectacles speaker a person can listen to location directions & can also help see call and message notifications without pulling out the phone from pocket.
Project Objectives- Building Smart Spectacles that helps people work efficiently in fast-track world, by having the information on the go without the hassle of handheld device
- Facilitate half blind people to recognize people around them or for surveillance.
- Lightweight wearables would be easy to wear and fashion oriented.
- Letting people quickly glance at the useful information like date/time, notifications instantly and take photos.
- Tell the directions to a destination that would be useful for the riders.
The project would be comprised of two sections,
1. Development of mechanical system and 2. Developing robust algorithms to function on glasses.
1. In the development of hardware section the camera module would be attached to raspberry pi and front section of the spectacles.
2. Raspberry pi would be attached to the right side of the spectacles in robust casing to cover the components.
3. Two tactile buttons would be on the casing one for navigating the menu and one for selection.
4. The vision system would be using the camera for identification and recognition of faces.
5. The memory card would be attached for the storage of OS and the algorithms.
6. The algorithms would be developed for the Raspberry pi platform and the App and would be incorporated.
Benefits of the ProjectSOT Smart Spectacles are wearable tech which is useful for the half blind people to recognize people around them, it is also can be used for surveillance activities, by using smart spectacles it is possible to continue work without blocking hands or touching your mobile while riding, it will be developed as a device that helps to see message and call notifications and navigates the location information. Delivery man can benefit by quick glance on the notifications and location information on the go without having to pull out the smartphone.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableThe Spectacles as wearable device it must be light weight and easy to carry so we are going to use the Raspberry Pi zero w for computing. The OLED display, 2 buttons and camera will be connected to it. The Spectacle will be operated through buttons on the glasses which will be used to navigate between different features of the Spectacles. Time and date will be displayed as default home screen and by using camera module, the facial recognition will identify and recognize the faces and display the name of the person on the glasses screen and will be able to take photos which we’ll be able to see in the Smartphone App. The user will be able to quick glance on any SMS or call notifications. The Map navigation can be used by selecting the destination on the App and receiving the audio directions on the Spectacles.
