Solid state devices based tap changing transformer
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryAlong with the construction and development of smart grid, the power system has put forward higher requirements for power quality. The On-Load Tap Changer (OLTC), which is the main device of distribution transformer, adjusts the onload taps in primary side of transformer in order to remain the stability of secondary voltage if load changes, without any power supply interrupted. It can ensure the power supply quality, improve the reactive power compensation and reduce the loss at the same time.
The development of traditional mechanical OLTC technology has become increasingly mature. However, traditional mechanical OLTC has some disadvantages, such as the big volume, complicated structure, slower action speed, arc caused by switching operation and the disability to control accurately. In recent years, the electronic OLTC and the hybrid OLTC, which switch the current lines with the assistances of power electronic devices.
Project ObjectivesObjective of this project are:
- To overcome on high arching by help of electronic switching.
- To reduce power loss in transmission line
- To automate voltage regulation by microcontroller.
- Drawbacks and benefits of modern tap changer and their comparison in voltage regulation
- To improve the power quality by maintaining the voltage levels nominal.
Our project is basically an idea of introducing electronic switching instead of previous mechanical switching. This idea would be use in tap changing transformers.
Benefits of the Project- Boost the switching speed
- No arching
- Minimize the energy losses
- Minimize the maintenance cost
- Desire jumping
- Minimize the size of switching mechanism
- High accuracy
- This prototype will adjust voltage according to the line losses.
- Triacs switching does not produces any arc and effeciently select taps.
- Reactive load will be reduced because of increase in voltage so losses compensates.
- As compare to mechanical tap changer OLTC solid state devices base tap changer works fast and efficiently with less losses.
