Solar powered water quality monitoring system by using wireless network system
Project Area of Specialization Information & Communication TechnologyProject SummaryThe basic building block of water quality monitoring using a wireless sensor network (WSN) powered by the solar panels is the main idea of ‘Underwater Wireless Sensor Network’ (UWSN). To monitor water quality over various sites is a real-time application. An excellent architecture constituted distributed sensor nodes and a base station powered by solar power will be prototyped. The sensor nodes and base station are connected using WSN technology like Zigbee. Data collected by numerous sensor nodes at the node side such as pH, oxygen level, and turbidity are sent via WSN to the base station. Data that we collect from remote sites will be displayed in visual format as well as it can be analyzed using different simulation tools at the base station. This system has advantages such as no carbon emission, low power consumption, more flexibility to deploy at a remote site, and so on.
Project ObjectivesAs we all know that water is an essential need to live. We need water for almost every purpose, but the most important purpose is drinking. Pakistan’s tap water or earth water is not so good to drink directly so we all use filtered water for drinking, which costs us much, annually. We all know about the tanker mafia in Karachi. These mafias are at their peak because Karachi’s water is not safe for drinking and other uses. Canal water is also neither safe nor hygienic for health. About 20% of the whole population of Pakistan has access to safe drinking water. The remaining 80% of the population is forced to use unsafe drinking water due to the scarcity of safe and healthy drinking water sources.
Project Implementation MethodWater is the most important need of life. The idea arose in mind about monitoring the quality of water. When we searched about it on the internet, we have seen, this idea is not new, and some students have worked on it. But in our country, nobody has chosen it. We read research papers and gather some information about this project. For the components which will be used, we have gathered information from the internet and local markets. For analyzing data, we would need VB (Virtual Basic) and MATLAB for simulation and other purposes. The finalized form will be displayed on the screen.
Benefits of the ProjectFollowing are the benefits of this project:
- The product will show the pH of the water.
- The product will show the oxygen level of water.
- The product will show the turbidity of water.
- The product uses Renewable energy sources i.e. Solar panels.
- it can also be used in remote areas.

Deliverables
- Measurement of pH, Oxygen level, and Turbidity level of Water.
- Supply of power using Solar Panel.
- Collection of Data from Source and send it to the Base Station
- Show visual format of Data using MATLAB and VB (Virtual Basic).
| Elapsed time in (days or weeks or month or quarter) since start of the project | Milestone | Deliverable |
|---|---|---|
| Month 1 | Designing the product | Product will deliver 4 things. |
| Month 2 | determining the sensors which are to be used in the project | There are 3 sensors which are to be used in the project i.e., pH, turbidity, and oxygen level sensor |
| Month 3 | determining the other components which are to be used in the project | Other components are, battery, solar panels, Zig-bee module, cables, monitor, etc. |
| Month 4 | Finding components in the market | We have found almost everything but, the problem we faced to find Zig-bee module in the market was it was not easily available in the market. |
| Month 5 | Purchasing Components | We Purchased some components including Battery, Solar panels, box, etc. |
| Month 6 | Assembling of the project | We assembled components. |
| Month 7 | Checking the product | The Products was Assembled |
| Month 8 | Testing the Product | The Product was tested and it was working effeciently. |
