smart water distribution and monitoring kit
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryClean potable water is a scarse commodity. We have seen that in our cities, this precious commodity gets wasted alot and the current water distribution system is totally controlled manually, having multiple mechanical valves which are controlled by line men or the valve operators. For each area a separate line man is designated. This makes the system all mechanical and prone to alot of mismanagement, distribution controversies as well as water loss. We will automate this whole system by making such kits which can directly be mounted on the present mechanical valves.
These kits would consist of gear or servo motors as well as a microcontroller that would open, half-open or close the valves of different areas with their respective scheduled days and timings,.We may also make this system iot based through which the whole water distribution system is monitored and troubleshooted from a single control room or any other part of the world. As this system is totally automated, equal and timely water supply to each and every area will be ensured with lossless distribution.
We propose an automated kit that could be easily mounted on the existing water distribution valves and would transform these into a fully automated felectronically controlable system.
Project Objectives- Our prime objective is to make an automation kit which could be directly coupled with the existing KWSB mechanical water distribution valves that could operate them with proper scheduled timings of respective areas and ensure equal and timely water supply to every area.
- We will use servo or gear motors to control the mechanical valves at three positions for example: full opened, half-open or closed.
- This project could also be able to predict line leakages as result of pressure drop by using pressure sensor.
- Complete monitoring of the whole system may also be possible from any place or any part or the world with the help of Wifi or GSM modules interfaced(optional).
- In case of power cutdown valves could also be operated through batteries because DC motors have been used.
Our implementation method will be as follows:
- on-software designing and modeling
- components availability
- mechancal works, for example: frame making, mechanical couple of motors with valves
- interfacing of different sensor (pressure/flow)
- interfacing and programing of microcontroller
- fabrication of project
- Our project aims to solve the problem of mismanagement of water distribution by forming a completely automated human less smart water distribution network where there will be no area-based biasness or any favor to any selected area based on favoritism.
- As the system is automated it doesn’t need any human intervention or valve operators.
- Distribution valves of different areas would be opened and closed for exact programmed timing and scheduled days.
- if we use IOT for monitoring, the faults in water valves or line leakages can be traced out easily and within no time. As well as the runtime open/closed status of mechanical valves and the pressure and flow of water may also be monitored.
- Significant improvement in the water loss during the water distribution process is anticipated in our proposed system.
The prototype made will have following components:
- 4 or 6 inches mechanical gate valves (rising).
- pic microcontroller or arduino (5v operating)
- pressure and flow sensors (5v operating)
- 24v DC gear motors (high torque)
- communication protocal for example; wifi module (5v operating)
- 4 or 6 inches pvc pipings
