Project Summary

The number of fatal road accidents are increasing day by day and have been a great challenge put in front of public health and concerned agencies.  Road accident is one of the cause of deaths and increasing day by day with lack of prevetion measures in transportation system. As reported in the dawn news articles recently, which confirms 36,000 casualties by road accidents in the last year 2018, confirmed by the motorway police. This project is going to serve a solution to this problem by introducing a system that will not only prevent the accident, by alerting the driver for safety parameters like over-speeding, close distance driving, and drowsiness, through alarm circuit, speaker and display LCD, but also protect the driver, in case of the accident as well, by initiating an emergency rescue operation. In order to understand the project properly, one needs to focus on the following four basic functions; this project is going to perform. Firstly it will prevent the accidents by alerting the driver about the danger of over speeding and close distance driving, secondly, it will detect the drowsiness in the driver with the help of drowsiness detection algorithm, which is performed by the camera placed on the visor and the brain(raspberry pi), thirdly, it will detect the accident in case if accident occurs with the help of piezoelectric sensor for head-on collision, and gyro sensor for tilting of a car and lastly it will initiate the emergency rescue operation in case of accident with the help of GSM/ GPRS modules, and hence inform the nearest hospitals about the accident along with, one of the guardian of the driver as well, and after the accident, if the driver is not hurt or severely injured then, the push button is placed on the dashboard of the car, by which the driver can interrupt the emergency rescue operation.

Project Objectives

The basic object of this project is to prevent the accident, and protect the driver in case of the accident.

The Project objectives include:

  1. To prevent the accident by alerting the driver about the over speeding, and close distance Driving, and drowsiness.
  2. To detect drowsiness in the driver, with the help of Drowsiness Detection Algorithm.
  3. To detect the accident with the help of piezoelectric sensor (head-on accident) and gyro sensor (tilting accident).
  4. To initiate emergency rescue operation in case of the accident, with the help of the GSM and GPRS along with the operation interrupt button as well.
  5. To stop the emergency rescue operation with the push button or interrupt button.

Project Implementation Method

This projects mainly focus of Safe Driving under different conditions including  drowsiness detection algorithm, the methodology of this drowsiness detection is comprises in the following parameters; the camera will be setup which will monitor the stream of faces; If a face is found we apply a facial landmark recognition and extract the eye region, basically facial landmark feature can be used to extract any visible part of the face, it not limited for the eyes only, but it is used specially for eyes in this application; through facial landmark feature we can determine the eye aspect ratio to determine if the eyes are closed or not; now by determining the time for which the eyes are closed we can easily find out the whether the driver is drowsy or not if the timing of eye close is long enough for it to detect the driver and judge by the raspberry pi compared to the threshold value that we have put in it then, the alarm will generate and a warning will be displayed on the monitor as well, along with the vocal warning as well. The main libraries which are going to be used in this algorithm are Open CV, dlib along with various supporting libraries such as imutils etc.

Second most important Operation of this project is to prevent the accident by alarming the driver about over-speeding through accelerometer,  close distance driving by ultrasonic sensor, tilt accident by gyroscope sensor, collision by piezoelectric sensor by displaying the visual warning through the monitor as well by the alarm circuit which will generate  vocal saved messages on the raspberry pi. Lastly, if the threshold value in the raspberry pi for the piezoelectric sensor or gyroscope sensor is breached then the emergency rescue operation will be activated through GSM/GPRS module which will not only locate the nearest hospital and send the message to them, but also send the message to the guardian as well, and finally the button is placed on the dashboard as well which driver can be used after the accident to stop the rescue operation, if he is not injured.

Benefits of the Project

This project is designed to ensure the safety of the driver, not only to prevent the accident by alarming the driver about the safety parameters and drowsiness but also to initiate an emergency rescue operation, after the accident as well.

It is beneficial for all the drivers of vehicles whether its, a four-wheel vehicle or more than four wheels, this project is applicable in all kinds of vehicles. It is easier to implement, and cheapest to produce, it will reduce a significant amount of road accidents, as all the most common reasons for the accident have been addressed on this project.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Although, all the material of the project will be implemented in a model of a car or one can say a toy car, to illustrate the working of the project, along with its motive behind its making will be well understood to the viewers as well through the model, but the placement, here in this situation of all the hardware will be given according to the real car. The placement of all the hardware of the project will be as follows:

1) The raspberry pi will be placed on the dashboard along with the accelerometer, gyrosensor, alarm circuit, speaker, batteries, GPS/GPRS module and the button to turn of emergency rescue operation.

2) The camera will be placed on the visor (used for sun shading for eyes) of inside the car.

3) The LCD Display will be placed on the dashboard, separately from the raspberry pi, and other sensors, just above the speakers on the car.

4)  The Piezo Electric Sensor will be placed all around the outside of the car covering all the major areas of a collision, and are connected with one another in series, and with raspberry pi via Bluetooth module.

5) The ultrasonic sensor will be placed on the front end and the lower of the outside of the car.
