Project Summary

The proposed system is usually designed for providing the proper level of water for growing up the plants all through the seasons. Even when the farmer is absence, these automatic irrigation systems always provides the proper distribution of water with bird and animal repellent system and GSM module.

This system proposes a solar power controlled irrigation system. Sensor collects the information about the water level distributed in fields and updates the farmer as well as the microcontroller.

This system consists of mainly three hardware parts/sections

  • Control section
  1.                  Arduino

  3.                  PIR Sensor

  2.                   Relay
  3.                   Pumping motor
  • Bird repellent part

Project Objectives

The aim of this project is to design and fabricate a comparatively  low cost, high performance and simple smart agriculture system using solar having the capability to

  • Store water in water tanks
  • Maintain moisture level
  • Repel Wildlife
  • Alert user through GSM

This system is to design a smart agriculture system to meet the increasing demand for energy in the field of agriculture by using solar energy for farmers. Agriculture plays a crucial role in the economy of a country. The inclusion of automation in the field of agriculture makes the farmer’s lives easier. The application of an automatic irrigation system requires a large amount of electric power. The subsidies paid for the power consumption by agriculture are less. So, in order to reduce the consumption of power from the main grid, a solar energy system is implemented on agricultural land. It has additional features like detecting the moisture level in the soil to supply the required amount of water for the crops and bird repellant.

Project Implementation Method

Water Level Detection  

 Moisture Level Detection

We will code the Arduino such that when moisture level in the soil decreases from a certain amount it will open the valve from the storage tank and water will move in. subsequently when water of storage tank will decrease the float pump will make the  motor to pump the water in the water tank so that it remains full.
If the Water level is greater then 70% level of the tank, float pump will be On and Motor/Water Pump will be off and LCD will display message “Motor is OFF”.
If water level is less than 70% level of the tank, float pump will be OFF and Motor/ Water Pump will be ON and LCD will display message “Motor is ON”.
If the Moisture sensor detects the soil moisture level less than 30% it will open the valve by relay  and will send SMS to user that “Valve is open”, and will also display message on LCD that “Valve is open”.
If the Moisture sensor detects the soil moisture level greater than 30% it will close the valve by relay  and will send SMS to user that “Valve is close”, and will also display message on LCD that “Valve is close”.
 
Bird Repellant/ Human intrusion Part:

For Wild life detection, we are Interfacing Arduino UNO R3 with PIR sensor which will detect any living thing in close vicinity , and will trigger a sound alarm that will scare off the birds and will give the farmer a notification. When any person will get into the vicinity, the alarm will again be triggered and farmer will get a notification by a GSM module.

Float Switch
The 2285 Level Float Switch is suitable for level switching of various liquids, sewage in shafts, tanks, basins or cisterns. The double-chambered float is made of injection molded tough polypropylene that ensures good waterproof protection. The contacting microswitch is incorporated in the float. The cable of the level switch is absolutely waterproof and PVC insulated. Different control tasks such as liquid level monitoring and pump control can be realized. It is mercury-free contact and suitable for level switching of drinking water, raw water or polluted liquids with low solid content. The level switching is done when the contact reaches the ±45° switching angle. The switching differential of the level switch is adjustable by the position of the counterweight on the cable. The level switches should be arranged appropriately in case of multi-level switching tasks to avoid undesired tangling of the cables.

Arduino UNO R3
Arduino UNO is a microcontroller board based on the ATmega328P. It has 14 digital input/output pins (of which 6 can be used as PWM outputs), 6 analog inputs, a 16 MHz ceramic resonator, a USB connection, a power jack, an ICSP header and a reset button.

PIR Sensor
The PIR Motion sensor module is an automatic control module based on infrared technology. It adopts LHI788 probe, which has high sensitivity, high reliability, low voltage working mode and low power consumption. It can be widely used in various types of automatic induction electrical equipment.

Moisture Level Detector: 
The soil moisture sensor consists of two probes which are used to measure the volumetric content of water. The two probes allow the current to pass through the soil and then it gets the resistance value to measure the moisture
