However, for agriculture water consumption is more than rainfall every year in Pakistan. Improving farm yield is essential to meet the rapidly growing demand of food for population growth across the world. By considering and predicting environmental circumstances, farm yield can be increased. Crop quality is based on data collected from field such as soil moisture, ambient temperature and humidity etc. Advanced tools and technology can be used to increase farm production. “IoT encompasses many new intelligent concepts for using in the near future such as smart home, smart city, smart transportation, and smart farming”. The technique can be used for application of accurate amount of fertilizer, water, pesticide etc. to enhance productivity and excellence. Sensors are hopeful device for smart agriculture. The realtime environmental parameters like soil moisture level, temperature and tank water level have continuous influence on the crop lifecycle. By forming sensor network, good monitoring of water regulation in the agriculture field can be achieved and soil watering system can be made automated.
The Smart irrigation System has wide scope to automate the complete irrigation system.It will not only automatically irrigate the water based on the moisture level in the soil but also monitors the land condition. At present there are emerging global water crisis where managing scarcity of water has become a serious job. This growth can be seen in countries such as Pakistan which have shortage of water resources and are economically poor. So this is the serious problem in agriculture area.This project proposed a Smart Irrigation System which is based on Raspberry pi that operate automatically by sensing the moisture content of the soil and turn ON/OFF the pump using relay without the intervention of farmer and hence save water.
Project ObjectivesThis main objectives and goals for “SMART SOIL IRRIGATION SYSTEM” are:
- water the soil automatically by checking moisture, temperature, Humidity after getting values from sensors.
- If the moisture level of soil is less than specified value then system check for temperature and humidity by getting value from sensors.
- User can also control system manually by using computer system.
- System will also check water level in the water tank and keep updating to user.
- User can see Daily, Weekly, Monthly water consumption report and timing by using System.
- this proposed system can Generate Income, Improve Agricultural Development, Adopt Modern Technologies, Address Social Welfare Activities, Reduce Poverty, To Access Markets And Good Prices.
The working of automatic irrigation system is very simple and easy to understand. In this project, Arduino is used for controlling the whole working of the circuit. First of all, when there is no moisture present in the soil, there will be conduction between two probes of the soil sensor. In result, the transistor will remain in ON state. Also, the pin13 of Raspberry-pi controller will remain low. After that, Raspberry-pi will send message to the user as Soil moisture is normal. Motor turned OFF”. In this situation, the motor pump will remain in “OFF” state. When there is no moisture in the soil, transistor Q2 becomes OFF. Also, pin D7 becomes high. Consequently, the Raspberry-pi send starts the water pump and send the message to the user as Low moisture detected. Motor is turned ON. Again, the motor pump will automatically be turned OFF when there is enough moisture in the soil detected by the soil moisture sensor.
Benefits of the ProjectThis smart irrigation system fulfills all the criteria of an ideal irrigation system. Some of the profitable benefits are:
- This smart irrigation system easily adapts with the weather condition and sense the moisture accordingly to operate the water pump
- The soil moisture sensor easily senses the high-water flow by sensing the moisture present in soil and therefore shuts down and starts automatically
- Using the smart irrigation system, we will manage the water flow remotely without going to the field.
- The LCD connected with the circuit displays the soil moisture data regularly which can be used to keep record of moisture at different instances
This smart irrigation system fulfills all the criteria of an ideal irrigation system. Some of the profitable features are:

- If the moisture sensor is dry then it send signal to controller to open the valve and pump otherwise, keep it close.

- System will also check water level in the water tank and keep updating to user on his/her smart phone.
- User can see Daily, Weekly, Monthly water consumption report and timing on smart phone App.
