Smart Rollator

Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject Summary

We’re making a project to successfully navigate indoor and outdoor environment for a blind person, who can be able to detect low and midheight obstacles. The most common tool that blind people currently use to navigate their environment is the standard white cane. One technical gadget is an eye stick, which has a limited use. Therefore, we have decided to make a modified and enhanced version of the conventional white cane. The standard white cane is only able to detect objects by touch and give the output as vibration. The Eye Stick helps blind people to avoid dangerous obstacles and determine where they are by reading the distance and obtaining the information through headphone or Bluetooth speaker. So, this project adds speaker to allow for blind person to become aware of obstacles and a blind person can also receive current location of place through speaker.

Benefits of the Project

This project is used to successfully navigate indoor and outdoor environment for a blind person, who can be able to detect low and midheight obstacles. The most common tool that blind people currently use to navigate their environment is the standard white cane. Therefore, we have decided to make a modified and enhanced version of the conventional white cane. The standard white cane is only able to detect objects by touch and give the output as vibration. So, in this project we’re adding Headphone or Bluetooth speakers to allow for blind person to become aware of obstacles and a blind person can also receive current location of place through speaker.

If our project built successfully, then we advertise our project on social media and advertisement can help us to attract many global companies to take interest in our project.  When any global company like our project, they like to hire us to develop more products like this project, to make availability in markets, which can help our blind customers to buy it.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Our Smart Rollator is robust and reliable product built for visually impaired public who want to user for their long travelling. This product will help blind people to use multiple functionalities in one single application, it can help to locate the desired location with the help of Internet/GPS after tracking the location destination application gives voice output and guide the person with the help of Bluetooth Headphones speakers. This product is hardware and software based, which is controlled by android smartphone.

All the sensors in this product detect the obstacles and send the signals to smartphone when obstacles are detected. The map of application uses GPS to locate current and destination location and mic of Bluetooth Headphone is used to give instructions to application.

Our customers are blinds, they are not able to see the GUI (Graphical User Interface) of application which we made in our product. To solve this problem, we give our customers voice command feature, so by using this feature they will be able to control this product.

When user switch on the power, then all the hardware devices of product are activated and user uses Bluetooth Headphones microphone to control the product and all voice data is controlled by android application.

The application used in the android smartphone which will be able to calculate and manipulate sensors data and taking voice commands of the user to follow its instructions and helps in navigation by giving instructions with the help of Bluetooth Headphones Speaker.

The method of communication system is that all the hardware is connected with smartphone and the smartphone uses internet of mobile carrier.

To enable the sensor to recognize which kind of obstacle is there, we need to store types of obstacles which requires not too much memory. In smartphone, the App may need more primary memory (RAM), because the application uses much more RAM to control all tasks of product and the secondary memory is expandable with the help of external memory (microSD card).

The data flow will be from smartphone to sensors when the instructions are sent and result of calculations will be sent from sensors to smartphone.

It is preferable that user uses Internet to access the map or user has to download all area where it travels in everyday life.
