Consequently, universities closed down to minimize the face-to-face contacts, and the majority of the universities are now conducting degree programmers through online delivery. Remote online delivery and assessment are novel experiences for many universities, which presents many challenges, particularly when safeguarding academic integrity. For example, invigilated assessments, often considered as more secure, are not an option given the current situation and detecting any cheating would be significantly challenging. This paper reviews assessment security in the digital domain and critically evaluates the practices from different universities in safeguarding academic integrity, including associated challenges.

Due to the impact of social distancing, it is a necessity for educational institutes to conduct online exams efficiently. The educational institutes have to face many challenges to conduct online examination. Therefore, there is a need of good online examination system that cope with these challenges. The proposed online examination system have some innovative features that would make it possible to invigilate the online exams. Invigilator will look each student activity during exam so no student cannot cheat. Smart QI would be a complete solution for educational institutes so that they can conduct online exams easily and effectively. It would be almost impossible for students to cheat in online exams. Smart QI would make the students not to cheat by any way. Smart QI would have a mobile app for the students to attempt the exams and a web app for the admin, teachers and invigilators. Smart QI will be developed with the basic features like making and assigning the tests to the students along with additional features such as screen recording and snapshot prevention to monitor and prevent cheating for the online tests. These are prominent features which make Smart QI different from other online exams systems.

Project Objectives

Smart QI would be a complete solution for educational institutes so that they can conduct online exams easily. Moreover, the proposed system will be intelligent enough intelligent to prevent students from cheating. Smart QI consist of a mobile interface and a web interface. The different types of users will have different access to these interfaces. We will be developing the basic features like making and assigning the tests to the students along with additional features such as screen recording and snapshot/screenshot prevention to monitor and prevent cheating for the tests. Students would only be able to take the online exams through our mobile app so that we can monitor their mobile activity in case they try to communicate with any other person or browse the internet for help in the exam. This system would be very efficient and reliable from making the quizzes to generate the reports for each individual group. Educational institutes would be able to use this system for their online examination due to its reliability. Moreover, the proposed Smart QI system would be cost effective. The main objective of this project is to provide an efficient online exam conducting system for educational institutes.

Project Implementation Method

Smart QI would have four modules to allow access to the different user roles to our application. The web interface would consists of admins, teachers and invigilators module. It would be built on a famous framework Laravel and will use firebase as the backend/database. The mobile interface module would be strictly for the students. It would be built on flutter and would use the Firebase firestore database. First the admin would create all the necessary accounts of teachers, invigilators and grouping of the students. Then teachers would be responsible for creating and assigning the tests to the students. Once the test is assigned, the students would be able to attempt on their mobile phones. The Smart QI app would start recording the students’ screens as soon as they start their test. Once they end their test, these screen recordings would be sent to our database. The invigilators then would be able to watch those recordings and identify any possible cheating cases.

The implementation of this project will start with implementation of the admin role and functionalities. After implementing the code for the teacher role they can create and assign the online exams. Then we would implement the student module so that students would be able to attempt the exams.

Benefits of the Project

The core objective of this project is to cover the loopholes that are present in the current online examination platforms. It is a very challenging task to conduct online exam without cheating, the Smart QI helps the educational institutes to conduct online examination without any headache of cheating in examination. Smart QI would enable educational institutes to keep an eye on the students while they take the online exams. Generally, students can easily find ways to cheat in online exams as there is no invigilation but Smart QI would be efficient enough to minimize the cheating resources during exams by recording of students’ mobile activities throughout the exam. This way, educational institutes would be able to monitor and detect cheating cases and kept the online exams fair enough.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The proposed project would be running on web as well as mobile phone platforms. It would need two different interfaces, one for web and one for mobile (both Android and IOS). The whole system would need four different modules. The four modules are as Admin, Teacher, Student and Invigilator. The web interface would be built by using Laravel framework. It would be used by admin, teacher and invigilator. The mobile platform would be built using Flutter. The mobile application would be used by students to give online examination on the application. Both these platforms would be connected with firebase as their backend/database.
