Project Summary

One of the most essential requirement in our daily life is water. Since it is required for many purposes, like for a human body to function and etc. In every home, water is utilized for many other purposes including laundry, and washroom and many more. if water is not avaliable at home than none of this purpose would be served and many homes don't have access to water which has become a major issue in our country. Many people struggle to monitor at which time water from main supply enters their house's main line. Residents don't know when they should turn ON/OFF the pump to transfer water from the main supply to their underground tank.Currently residents keeps switching the pump ON and OFF after every while to check water is coming or not. Or they get to know about it from the neighbours. Our project aims to remedy this issue by providing the SMART PIPE AND WATER QUALITY CHECKING SYSTEM. Water flow in main line will be automatically detected and if quality conditions are suitable the pump will switch ON and when the water stops in the main line pump will automatically switch OFF. The resident will be notified about the switching of pump through text message. If there is any leakage in the main pipe which is major issue these days, will also be detected even if there is miminum water leakage in the main pipe. There is also a water level monitoring system in the main underground tank, which will monitor water level at all times and when the water goes beyond the maximum level then the motor will automatically switch OFF. 

Project Objectives

There are five major objectjectives that we will be achieving in our project 

1- Water Flow Detection : Our primary motive is to detect the water flow in the pipe which is the basic condition which will turn on the motor, to fulfill this desired condition we are using WATER FLOW SENSOR. This sensor is compatible to our microcontroller.

2- Checking Water Quality :  As the water starts to flow in the pipe our second objective is checking water's qualitty in which we examine the Turbidity and pH of the water which is flowing in the pipe. Turbidity is clarity of water which is measured by Turbidity sensor that scan the water, pH value of the water is inspected by pH sensor,

3- Bypassing Filthy Water : While water has been checked by the quality sensors a decision is taken by the microcontroller according to the preset condition. If the water accomplishes to achieve all the conditions it is allowed to flow in the tank.

Incase, any of the condition is not attained by the flowing water, it is bypassed to the sewerage line, This detouring is done by 3 ways solenoidal valve

4- Leakage detection: Sometimes due to wear and tear conditions the water pipe get missshapen which inresults of leakage of water. To cater this problem we are using the phenomenon of continuity between the copper strips, which get shorted by the leaked water.

5-Water Level Surveillance: As clean water after clearing all the tests it enters into the tank, while water continues to flow into the tank water level in the tank continue to increase. this increasing level is recorded by ultrasonic sensor which gives the signal to the microcontroller when the water obtains the predefined level this signal is identified by the mircocontroller and stops the motor.

6. GSM module: It notify the resident quality of water, motor switching, leakage and water level. This notifying the resident will done by text message sent to the resident.

Project Implementation Method

We aim to make a prototype of the main pipe line which will have two supply water tanks on the input side, one will be of clean water whicb is suitable to use in our homes and in the other supply tank there will be filthy water which will be bypassed once detected. 
As the supply of water is on , the water first goes through the water flow sensor which detects the water and switches the pump ON. Then we determine the quality of the water using the Turbidity sensor and pH sensor. As the clean water flows through these sensors the qaulity is checked and if the turbidity and the pH level of the flowing water fit for clean water conditions then the water is allowed to enter the main underground tank. When the filthy water supply is on and it flows through these sensors, the sensors detect the poor quality and instantly the decision is taken by the microcontroller and the bypass valve is switched using a relay and the filthy water is bypassed from the main underground tank. 
Before the water enters the underground tank there is leakage detection system. We have placed multiple  copper stips along  the pipe horizontally with some distance between them,  which will detect the minimum water leakage in the pipe. If there is a leak then due to the leaking water the copper stips will get short and this will be detected by the microcontroller.
At the end of the pipe there is a water tank which will be filled only when there is clean water supply and the water level is continuously monitored in the tank using the ultrasonic sensor. When the tank is filled the ultrasonic sensor will detect it and the microcontroller with take the decision to swith the pump OFF.
The user will be notifyed through text message using GSM module about, the switching of the pump, the qaulity of the water, leakage if there is and finally about the water level in the underground tank.

Benefits of the Project

The benefits that this project will offer the community:

?    The residents will no longer have to come and switch the pump ON/FF manually to check whether water is coming or not, since it will be all automated.
?    Those residents who aren’t aware of the water timing due to which they didn’t access to water will now have access to water without the need of knowing the timing of water.
?    The residents will now know the quality of the water they are receiving which currently they don’t get to know until they start using it. If the quality is poor then the resident could register complain to the Water Supply Department so the issue is resolved in before their underground gets filled with dirty water?
?    The water pump now won’t be sucking air when there is no water in main line. Firstly, this won’t damage the pump and increase its life, secondly now the residents will now no longer have to manually prime the pump to get it running again.

The residents will also get to know about if there is any leakage in their main pipe, with this knowledge a lot of water can be saved from being wasted and since water is a major resource so it should not be wasted.A complain can be registered about the leaking water and it can be fixed as soon as possible with miminum water being wasted.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The end product of our project will be a prototype of Main line’s pipe.
This pipe will have all the sensors mentioned above. The quality and flow will be detected in the pipe. And according to the information detected by the sensors the decision will be taken about switching of the pump. The decision will be taken by the controller and the switching of the pump will be done using a relay. If there is any leakage in the main pipe then it will be detected. The water level will be monitored and if the level is beyond the specified level then the pump will be switched off and this decision will also be taken by the microcontroller. The user will be notified by a text message about the Pump Situation and the quality of the water and about leakage and the water level in main main underground tank.
