Project Summary

Home automation is the automatic control of electronic devices in your home. These devices are connected to the Internet, which allows them to be controlled remotely. With home automation, devices can trigger one another so you don’t have to control them manually via an app or voice assistant. For example, you can put your lights on schedules so that they turn off when you normally go to sleep, or you can have your thermostat turn the A/C up about an hour before you return to work so you don’t have to return to a stuffy house. Home automation makes life more convenient and can even save you money on heating, cooling and electricity bills. Home automation can also lead to greater safety with Internet of Things devices like security cameras and systems. But hold up; what’s the Internet of Things?

?

Internet of Things vs. Home Automation

The Internet of Things, commonly known as IoT, refers to any device that’s connected to the Internet that isn’t normally; for example, a smart light bulb that you can turn on and off via an app. All home automation devices are IoT devices, which can be automated to trigger one another. So while IoT refers to the devices themselves, home automation is what you can do with the IoT devices to make your life just a tad bit easier.

How Does Home Automation Work?

Home automation works via a network of devices that are connected to the Internet through different communication protocols, i.e Wi-Fi, Bluetooth, ZigBee, and others. Through electronic interfaces, the devices can be managed remotely through controllers, either a voice assistant like Alexa or Google Assistant or an app. Many of these IoT devices have sensors that monitor changes in motion, temperature, and light so the user can gain information about the device’s surroundings. To make physical changes to the device, the user triggers actuators, the physical mechanisms like smart light switches, motorized valves or motors that allows devices to be controlled remotely.1

Home automation works on three levels:

Monitoring: Monitoring means that users can check in on their devices remotely through an app. For example, someone could view their live feed from a smart security camera

Control: Control means that the user can control these devices remotely, like panning a security camera to see more of a living space.

Project Objectives

The main objective of this project is to develop a simple and cost efficient home automation system with an Android application which would act as a remote and make at most use of all the appliances that can be connected which would help to simplify daily life. The idea of conserving electricity means to avoid wasting it and its minimum utilization. This means doing simple things like turning off the electrical appliance when any person is about to leave the room etc. The biggest motivation for the people to conserve electricity is for the accumulated savings in their energy bills at the end of the year. Now a days due to the Unplugging of fans and lights when it is not in use, most of the energies are wasted. This is happened mainly because most of the switches are located far away from the users. Modern houses are gradually shifting to centralized control system, involving wireless controlled switches. Basically, every single appliance in your house can be controlled using a remote device. Android based E-home is an application of embedded system which integrates Android operating system, Arduino controller and the Bluetooth for the implementation of Smart Home. Any Android device can act as a transmitting device. The user can control any appliance through a user friendly mobile application built in Android platform. In order to avoid this situation, we have proposed a system using Bluetooth and Android application which help users to control the fans and lights within a certain distance from them. Also nowadays all the new homes are shifting towards LED lights so by using our designed app and system we can control the intensity of these lights and also apply it in other applications like fan, motor etc

Project Implementation Method

This provides a low cost-effective and flexible home control and monitoring system with the aid of an integrated micro-web server with internet protocol (IP) connectivity for access and to control of equipment and devices remotely using Android-based smartphone app. The proposed system does not require a dedicated server PC with respect to similar systems and offers a new communication protocol for monitoring and controlling the home environment with more than just switching functionality. The use of Web Services is an open and interoperable method for providing remote access service or applications can communicate with each other Smart home interfaces and device definitions to ensure interoperability between Wi-Fi devices from various manufacturers of electrical equipment, meters and smart energy enables products to allow manufactured. In this project gives the intelligent operation for lamps and fans. Here the system is connected with temperature control and lamp control. Light dependent resistor (LDR) and Temperature sensor (LM35) are the main components for this automatic control of lamps and fans. Here the LDR is responsible for lamp control and LM35 is responsible for controlling the operation of fan. The proposed home energy control systems design intelligent services for users and provides, The proposed system are implemented with smartphone.

Benefits of the Project

There are several benefits of this project some of them they are.

1 Managing all of your home devices from one place. The convenience factor here is enormous. Being able to keep all of the technology in your home connected through one interface is a massive step forward for technology and home management. Theoretically, all you’ll have to do is learn how to use one app on your smartphone and tablet, and you’ll be able to tap into countless functions and devices throughout your home. This cuts way back on the learning curve for new users, makes it easier to access the functionality you truly want for your home.

2. Flexibility for new devices and appliances. Smart home systems tend to be wonderfully flexible when it comes to the accommodation of new devices and appliances and other technology. No matter how state-of-the-art your appliances seem today, there will be newer, more impressive models developed as time goes on. Beyond that, you’ll probably add to your suite of devices as you replace the older ones or discover new technology to accompany your indoor and outdoor spaces. Being able to integrate these newcomers seamlessly will make your job as a homeowner much easier, and allow you to keep upgrading to the latest lifestyle technology.

3. Maximizing home security. When you incorporate security and surveillance features in your smart home network, your home security can skyrocket. There are tons of options here -- only a few dozen of which are currently being explored. For example, home automation systems can connect motion detectors, surveillance cameras, automated door locks, and other tangible security measures throughout your home so you can activate them from one mobile device before heading to bed. You can also choose to receive security alerts on your various devices depending on the time of day an alert goes off, and monitor activities in real-time whether you’re in the house or halfway around the globe.

4. Remote control of home functions. Don’t underestimate the power of being able to control your home’s functions from a distance. On an exceptionally hot day, you can order your house to become cooler in just enough time before you get home from work. If you’re in a hurry to get dinner started but you’re still at the store, you can have your oven start to preheat while you’re still on your way home. You can even check to see if you left the lights on, who is at your front door, or make sure you turned off all your media while you’re away.

5. Increased energy efficiency. Depending on how you use your smart-home technology, it’s possible to make your space more energy-efficient. For example, you can have more precise control over the heating and cooling of your home with a programmable smart thermostat that learns your schedule and temperature preferences, and then suggests the best energy efficient settings throughout the day.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Relay on/off

Door on/off

COMPONENTS used

•USB CAMERA

USB Cameras are imaging cameras that use USB 2.0 or USB 3.0 technology to transfer image data. USB Cameras are designed to easily interface with dedicated computer systems by using the same USB technology that is found on most computers.

•PIR  (Passive infrared sensor )

A passive infrared sensor (PIR sensor) is an electronic sensor that measures infrared (IR) light radiating from objects in its field of view. They are most often used in PIR-based motion detectors. PIR sensors are commonly used in security alarms and automatic lighting applications.

Proportional Integral (PI) Controller.

Proportional Integral controller sometimes also known as   proportional plus integral (PI) controllers.

It is a type of controller formed by combining proportional and integral control action. Thus it is named as PI controller.

FLOAT SWITCHES

A float switch detects the level of a liquid in a tank. Based on the water level,

it will open or close an electrical circuit generally used to pump water in or out of the tank.

A float switch moves with the liquid level up and down

SOLENOID DOOR LOCK

A solenoid door lock is a remote door locking mechanism that latches or opens by means of an electromagnetic solenoid.

In most cases, the actual locking mechanism of a solenoid door lock will be identical to a conventional key-operated example.
