Smart Gas Leakage Detector is Internet of Things (IoT) based project that will be used to reduce casualties due to gas outages/leakages in indoor areas of urban Pakistan. The proposed system shall be able to monitor gas leakage and
generate alarms accordingly. The system shall include a web portal and a mobile application for to help user with other auxiliary statistics.
 

Project Objectives Project Objectives:  

In urban Pakistan, primary mechanism for indoor heating in winter are gas heaters. These heaters produce warmth by burning natural gas, primarily methane gas. The natural gas is supplied by a central company such as Sui Southern Gas Company(SSGC) and Sui Northern Gas Pipeline Limited
(SNGPL). Due to rationing of natural gas outages are common. Many outages occur when residents of a house are asleep. This results in casualties.

A few examples of such cases are given below:

1. There happens many incidents that lead to deaths and injuries due to gas discharge in winters. In January 2020, a 30 years old man died of suffocation and his wife lost her consciousness . It all happened because they forgot to
close the gas valve of heater at their home (The Express Tribune NEWS,2020). 

2. A blast caused by a suspected gas leak in the same year (2020), that had killed at least three people including a newborn girl and a teen aged housemaid in a colony in Islamabad.

Our primary goal is to develop a system that eliminates such incidents.

Project Implementation Method Project Implementation Method: 

Project implementation is described in the given sections below:

1. Mandatory Features - First Iteration

• Design and development of a device that can sense presence of Methane gas in indoor environment.
• The device is able to gure out if the quantity of gas crosses danger level and is able to generate alarms accordingly.
• The device is able to send data to a central server periodically.
• The central server has a well dened database to hold all the data received from all deployed devices.
• The central server also has a well dened database to hold all the users.
• Mobile application that allows individual users to have up to date knowledge of their indoor environments.
• Web application that allows individual users to have up to date knowledge of their indoor environments.

2. Additional Features - Second Iteration
• Updating the device to be able to monitor other gases in the environment.
• The data transmission to/from the device is based on standardized protocols e.g., Message Queuing Telemetry Transport (MQTT) or RabbitMQ (Message Sending/Receiving Software).
• The central server is a cloud based server which is more than 99.99 percent of times available.
• The central server database is to be updated to incorporate other stakeholders such as municipal administration and provisioning companies.
• Mobile application is updated to incorporate added functionality of the device and new data.
• Web application is updated to incorporate added functionality of the device and new data.


3. Additional Features - Third Iteration
• Updating the device to be able to shutdown the heater in real time.
• Addition of analytical engine at cloud end which can provide micro guidelines (for end user) and macro guidelines (for municipality and provisioning companies).
• System testing and validation in real indoor environment
• Converting the system into a product.

Our project will have following benifits after its completion.

1. Reduce Casualties:

Death cases that usually happen in Pakistan due to gas evacuation from heaters in winters. We have aim to reduce the casualty’s ratio by develpoment of SGLD.

2. Environment Saver:

Spread of gases in the environment is a dangerous to the human lives but it also effects our environment, this product will save environment with its efficient working.

3. Money Saver:

If gas will keep on evacuating from the heaters without any need this will ultimately raise the gas used units per months and hence increase the bills. We have aims to update the users with the gas they are using via mobile devices and hence it will help in saving money.

The proposed system has three distinct but interconnected layers as given below:
a. Hardware Layer
b. Data Layer
c. Interface Layer
Our development methodology is based on two major principles:
a. Working on all layers in parallel since all these layers are interconnected.
b. To work in an incremental fashion.
Overall system is to be developed in three iterations. These iterations are described in the previous section. We plan to use following hardware/software for the development of this system. This may change as we go along based on new fndings.

• Primary sensor MQ4/MQ5/MQ135
• Wireless communication WiFi shield
• PHP and Python (Programming Language(s)) for server.
• Android Studio/Java for mobile application.
• HTML, CSS and PHP for web portal.
