SMART FIRE FIGHTING AND PROTECTION SYSTEM
Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject SummaryProject is aimed to increase effectiveness in area of industrial safety and will be able to demonstrate industrial prototype of a Fire Fighting system which will integrate microcontroller between sensors and system to show pressure monitoring of hydrant rings, pump operation in case of decrease in pressure, working of sprinkler system in case of heat and flame detection and low level water detection. Project also includes alert in form of text message to respective authorities as soon as fire or heat is detected and in case of low water level in reservoir. For heat and flame sensing respective sensors will be used. Integrating microcontroller eliminates issues in existing system. Considering increase in fire incidents smart Fire Fighting systems are essential for every industrial and commercial setup.
Project Objectives- To construct prototype of a Smart Fire Fighting and Protection system which will operate in accordance with micro-controller and sensors.
- To provide more efficient safety solution in regards with fire safety.
To demonstrate industrial prototype of a Fire Fighting System main fire ring of approximately (4.5 x 4.7) feet will be constructed using PVC pipes. Ring diameter will be 4 inch which will be able to hold approximately 60 litres of water. PVC pipe ring will be supported with metal frame to increase robustness of the prototype. Main tank will be placed within main fire ring area. To supply water from tank to main ring half (1/2) horsepower monoblock pump will be used, pump will supply water and maintain pressure inside main fire ring. To monitor pressure analog water pressure sensor will be installed in main ring, pressure sensor is used to sense pressure abnormalities and control pump operation. Flame sensor will be used to detect presence of flame and in such case operate solenoid valve which will eventually allow flow of water to designated flame present area. Solenoid valve of ½ inch will be used for controlling water flow. To enhance the effectiveness of the system automatic alert messages will be sent to respective authorities once flame has been detected or water level in the main tank has dropped to low level. Sensors included in this prototype are connected to main controller. Controller is responsible to collect input from all sensors and provide output based on its coded instructions. Final demonstration of this prototype will be showcase all working hardware and software components, sprinkler operation once flame has been detected and role of pump to provide continuous supply of water.
Benefits of the ProjectRecently 16 people lost their life’s following the tragic fire at a chemical factory in Karachi. At certain incidents related to fire hazards delay or late arrival of municipal Fire Fighting and insufficient availability of extinguishing material has been observed, this suggests the use and installation of in house firefighting system which can work to eliminate hazardous condition in case of fire incidents. Pressure monitoring becomes necessary in hydrant rings as it ensures to provide sufficient amount of water pressure and flow at outlet of fire hydrants once required. Such level of safety in fire systems serve to increase overall efficiency of the system providing better degrees of protection from hazards. Sprinklers used in present times are bulb controlled sprinklers, when temperature is sufficient enough it breaks the glass bulb activating sprinkler head. In this prototype we will be controlling sprinkler and pumps using a microcontroller. Sprinkler will activate once flame has been detected. Using microcontroller based sprinkler system prevents wastage of water as microcontroller based sprinklers will automatically disengage once fire sensor starts receiving normal ranges of temperature.
Industries in Pakistan are growing gradually, almost all industries which include the use of flammable substances, heat work and machinery are at risk of starting fire and require efficient fire hydrant system.
Technical Details of Final Deliverable- Complete demonstration of hardware including pump, main ring, water tank and frame installation.
- To generate an automated message, which indicates the fire alert.
- Automatic operation of pump once pressure in hydrant ring is reduced to desired level.
- Automatic operation of pump closure once desired pressure level is maintained in hydrant ring.
- Automatic operation of sprinkler system once flame/heat has been sensed.
- Automatic operation of closure of sprinkler system once flame has been extinguished.
