Project Title

SMART FARMING BASED DECISION SUPPORT SYSTEM FOR OPTIMUM POTATO YIELD

Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject Summary

Pakistan is an agribusiness nation and almost 60% of population is connected with farming. Potato is the fourth biggest harvest in Pakistan. Smart Farming and Precision agriculture techniques are being used worldwide. However, many problems, like diseases and pests, became more hazardous and a large number of farmers are lacking knowledge of the right cultivation technique. These include pests and disease control, land preparation and irrigation, fertilizer application, crop rotation and multi-cropping techniques. Potato are cultivated in Districts of Okara, Sahiwal, Kasur, Sialkot, Sheikhupura, Jhang, Lahore, Narowal, Pakpattan, Gujranwala, T.T. Singh and Khanewal from the Punjab. SUPARCO Pakistan is providing the Remote sensing facility to improve the yield.

However there is a need of Real-time Potato Monitoring system on the basis of which Smart decisions can be taken for optimal yield based on reliable input parameters for crop yield forecast and estimation modeling. Therefore the aim of this project is to develop Fuzzy Logic Based Decision Support System comprising of integrated Sensor, Networking, Cloud and Decision Support layers to provide suggestions and alarms needed for optimal yield. The sensor layer consisting of PH Sensor, Soil Moisture Sensor, Humidity and Temperature Sensor will transfer data to cloud through Internet. The real-time data available in cloud will be segregated according to the GPS location and useful information will be provided to user on the mobile phone. The decision support system will take into consideration the available data from sensors, historic trends, impact of weather patterns and accordingly provide suggestions, alarms needed for optimal yield. This Project is being executed in collaboration with Potato Research Institute, Sahiwal, Pakistan.

Project Objectives Project Implementation Method

The project has been divided into different phases.

First of all the sensors collect the data from agriculture land. The sensors provide moisture of soil, pressure, humidity and temperature from targeted land. This data will be transmitted to the web server using fuzzy logic through DEV Board and Node MCU, where all data will be analyzed. At the end data will be displayed through an android application.

Benefits of the Project

This prototype will be capable of monitoring potato crop parameters when deployed in the field at different locations on the farm. After the completion of the final project, the farmers or the landowners will easily monitor their farm through application on their Smart Phones. With the help of this IOT application the data can be stored and retrieved from anywhere. This project will make farmers aware of modern technology and will also provide easiness to the farmer in terms of farming. In future it can be automated for irrigation and the system can be enhanced with security of farmland under video surveillance which prevents it from obtrude intrusion.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

software partĀ

Software part of this framework includes Proteus and a mobile application. Proteus can be used to test programs and embedded designs for electronics before actual hardware testing. And mobile application is created on Android Studio. Arduino code will be written in Arduino Development Environment for hardware interfacing.

The hardware mainly consist of PH sensor, temperature and soil moisture sensor, humidity sensor, micro-controller and solar PVĀ
