Smart Environmental Monitoring System

Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject Summary

This project is focused on the development of such modular devices that collect data related to air quality. Our main goal is to make a network of such devices, so we have a whole view of the problem. Currently, we are unaware of the trends of air pollution, i.e., why, every winter since 2016, Lahore in covered in SMOG which eventually leads to many health problems. To address this issue, it is necessary to recognize the trend of these abnormalities in different areas of a city and then to take steps to control it. This device would help in monitoring the levels of different levels of pollution, which is the first step in solving this problem. Without proper awareness about the magnitude of this problem, people will not raise their voices against it to push the government to act. For this reason, we require a low-cost environmental monitoring system in our country which will have multiple nodes 4-5 Km apart.

Project Objectives

Our objective is to provide a generic device that is compatible with several sensors used for environmental monitoring such as CO, SO2, NO, dust, particulate matter, and SMOG. The raw data from the sensors will be captured by the microcontroller and processed into values for statistical and graphical analysis. The data will be sent over the internet via the Wi-Fi module onto the AWS platform. The information on the environmental factors using statistics and graphs will be displayed on a website that will be hosted using the EC2 service provided by AWS. AWS provides its own DNS protocol using Route53 so a server will be set up for anyone to connect to and gain access to the information using a website link that connects to our website’s IP address.

Project Implementation Method

As in the above block diagram, the implementation consists of hardware parts such as a microcontroller and cheap sensors easily available in the market. The sensors will be calibrated on the software side such that they will provide less erroneous and more probable results. The data side involves the use of AWS cloud for data storage and computing. The data will be provided through a medium such as a website or a mobile app.

The above makes up only one node for one location that will cover up a 4-5 Km radius area. Multiple nodes such as this will be deployed at different districts for more precise information regarding the environmental condition of that particular area.

Benefits of the Project

Currently, there is no detailed data i.e. is available to the public. According to the Report of Smog Commission by Lahore High Court data available about Air Pollution is scant. AQI provided by Environment Protection Department (EPD) is unreliable because this data consists of only one value per day which isn’t enough to perform proper data analysis.

Off-the-shelf devices available in the market like AirVisual Pro are very expensive (PKR 90,000) and those devices are not even designed for our local environment.

Therefore, our devices will be much cheaper and will cater to all the local conditions of Pakistan such as load shedding and daily life patterns.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

There are two technical parts of this project, the first is cloud computing and the second is sensor calibration. Cloud computing will be implemented through AWS cloud services for the storage of data and computing. Sensor calibration involves applying regression techniques to the data captured by the sensors and mapping it to a more accurate and calibrated sensor that will be a one-time expense.
