Project Summary

We have proposed a system that consists of a smart energy meter integrated with the Internet Of Thing(IoT) and the core component of this project is Microcontroller. Arduino can be used for performing all-important tasks such as getting energy consumption information share with it to consumer and service provider. Along with this Arduino is energy efficient consequently, it consumes less power, it is fastest, has two Universal Asynchronous Receiver and Transmitter(UARTS) port. The meters at our houses are not replaced, but a small adjustment on the already installed meters can change the existing meters into smart meters. The use of the GSM module offers a feature of notification through SMS. One can easily access the meter working through web page that we designed. Continuous reading with cost will be accessible on the web page. Automatic ON & OFF of the meter is possible.

The planned system uses virtual instrument programming design that should be thinkable on a web server that will work with the internet of things. The framework can screen the status and send data to the webserver and a ready SMS through GSM will be sent certainly, if the conditions get strange, to a concerned expert cell phone.

Project Objectives

Electricity provider do a lot of effort to collect energy meter reading of each consumer. They have hired thousands of employees whose job is only to take energy meter reading & they are using a sufficient amount of budget on them. Many times, errors like extra bill amount, or notification electric board even though the bill is paid are common errors. Also, Energy theft is destroying the utilities of the electric system in revenue each year.it is quite difficult for the energy provider to check and solve theft by going area by area. So, the remedy for all these issues of electricity provider & consumers is smart energy meter with the internet of thing. This system will eliminate the third party role between electricity providers & consumers. Along with this energy, theft issue is also being resolved by making consumer & provider connections secure by current and voltage sensors.

Project Implementation Method

The hardware implementation of this projected system consists of a microcontroller, Energy Meter with optocoupler for connecting with processor, appliances connected through relays to microcontroller. To communicate with the server, we need Wi-Fi/ GPRS. The energy consumption is being calculated using the energy optocoupler IC and microcontroller. As we know that on a working meter that one LED continuously blinks, it is nothing but indicates the count of power. So, when LED blinks, the units are counted. Normally, 3200 blinks are one unit. The LED whenever blinks it produces only 0.7v which is not suitable for microcontroller to capture, so to remove this error we are using an optocoupler. Protecting From energy theft Three transformer are connected to load from may supply through microcontroller. The microcontroller checks the reading from one potential & two current transformers. The microcontroller measures current between two CT, supply voltage variation from the utility to protect the customer equipment. We will design a webpage for operating Arduino and Energy Meter with the help of HTML.

Benefits of the Project

. The Electricity service provider takes charge of the consumption of energy from each consumer by sending meter readers in each house school, hospital, or any organization to collect the reading of energy meters which allocate at each consumer area. Through this reading, the service provider sends bills to consumers. That raises expenditure of service provider also takes a lot of time to collect the whole data. Consumers unable to get knowledge of at what amount of energy he is consuming a daily basis or monthly until he will not receive the bill. Another issue is energy theft even service provider cannot find out that who one else is stealing energy & from which energy meter. For all the solutions we proposed a system called “smart energy meter”. With this consumers can get information about energy consumption daily and monthly wise through SMS. Also, this data will available for a consumer on the website. More importantly when energy theft tries to attach illegal connection to your meter than system sends SMS to you & your service provider.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

 FINALIZING SOFTWARE REQUIREMENTS AND THEIR WORKING

First and for most, we will make the whole circuit on stimulation software where we will see whether it is working properly or is their a need for improvement. Additionally, we will check the working principle of each component of how it is working. how long it will work properly. Also, we make sure that we have made programming for a microcontroller for performing specific tasks that are working according to our requirements.in this way

FINALIZING HARDWARE REQUIREMENTS AND THEIR WORKING

After doing all these things we will come to hardware where we brought all required components. All the components needed for the project will be soldered on PCB. The PCB can made on stimulation software where we have checked our circuit. After soldering them on PCB we will check them whether they are working properly or there is a need for troubleshooting.

Then we analyse the core component of our proposed system such as Microcontrollers, Wi-Fi Module and GSM module. Check that date can be accessed on the webpage for users and services providers conveniently. Is GSM sending the energy utilization information to the user properly? Finally, we will check the sensor CT(current transformer)and PT(potential transformer) are they working properly or not and we will use them for thief detectors. If there is a change in voltage or current sensors will detect it and send an alert message to the user through GSM and WIFI module. If there is no change in current and voltage they will not send messages. And arrange all the components on PCB and Varo -board In this way we will complete our project.
