Usually, people are unaware of the electricity wasted by the appliances which are turned on for the whole day. People would like to save the money by controlling slabs of the tarriffs, they desire but they could not. Thus, to manage the energy consumption of devices effectively and to save the energy as well as to reduce the electricity bill, this project is proposing Smart Energy maNagement Switch (SENSe).
Smart Energy maNagement Switch (SENSe) -a Smart Plug , is a networked power switch which is plugged into a normal electric AC power outlet. It allows any electric appliance or device plugged into it to be wirelessly and remotely controlled via a mobile (smartphone) App. The SENSe smart plug provides the detailed information about the energy consumption of devices to the consumer by sensors and allows the user to pre-set the units/time for the device which helps in the reduced cost of the electricity bills. Three different ranges of designed smart switches are
1. Time based smart switch
2. Units based smart switch
3. Centralized smart switch
In this project, the mobile application is included which links the user to the Smart Energy maNagement Switch SENSe for measuring and controlling the consumption. Through the application, the user can be made aware of the energy consumption so that they can use the power accordingly. Through the mobile application, consumers can either input the desired units that they want to utilize in the month along with the priority of appliances from low to high (low being the ones whose cut off from power would not cause a significant effect) or they can either enter the desired time for each device they want it to run. To maintain the desired units for a day the appliances with the lowest priority would be cut off from the supply with a notification to the consumer.
The Smart Energy maNagement Switch SENSe will not only benefit the consumer but also the government and utilities as it can subsequently lead to reduce the unusual power consumption.
Project Objectives- Implement a hardware to effectively and accurately measure the various electrical parameters (Voltage, current , power and energy
- Develop a mobile application for the user to easily interact with the Smart Energy maNagement Switch (SENSe) , where the user can enter the desired units and time for a certain device and can also see the progress and statistics of any device.
- Implement the code and hardware for the wireless communication of the mobile application and the Smart Energy maNagement Switch (SENSe) and the logic implementation.
The implementation method is to understand the working of Power Measuring,Bluetooth Communication, learning of how to make Android Application, to link all these modules with the Microcontroller and testing and compiling the whole setup into a plug hardware structure. For achieving this we have the following tasks:
- To understand the implement the circuit for measuring the power and energy consumption of various loads and verifying them.
- Linking multiple devices along with the microcontroller and the Energy Measuring Circuit.
- Linking the setup with OLEDs to display various parameters (V, I,P,E).
- Learning how to make Mobile Application.
- Understanding wireless communication (Bluetooth and Radio).
- Building the Mobile Application and implementing the logic of three ranges of smart switches i.e. time-based controlling, units based controlling, centralized bank based controlling.
- Combining and testing the application with the hardware setups.
- Compiling the whole setup into a plug structure.
ABOUT HARDWARE STRUCTURE:
The Smart Energy maNagement Switch(SENSe) will consist of a box, with all the components placed inside it compactly.
- On the outside, it will have a socket for connecting the device for which energy management is desired(like a refrigerator) and a small LED displaying the voltage, current, power consumption of the device and energy used by it.
- On the inside, we will be having a circuit for measuring all four electrical parameters to be displayed on the LED, a circuit for wireless communication with any android device, SD card and Real time module to keep the record and track of time respectively and a switching mechanism to switch off the device. The Radio Communication module will also be used for wireless communication in bank-based controlling.
ABOUT MOBILE APPLICATION (SENSe):
The mobile application will have the following features:
- The SENSe mobile application will allow the user to configure the Smart Switch according to the desired mode.
- There will be three modes of controlling: Times Based Controlling, Energy Based Controlling and Centralized kwh Units Bank based Controlling.
User will have to enter the product code before configuring any device and the app will always keep the user updated with the statistics of any device.
Benefits of the ProjectThe SENSe project has the following benefits:
- This project can be beneficial for every kind of energy consumer. The smart monitoring and display help user to get aware of the monthly energy consumption of various appliances.
- A user can manually allocate the energy units of a device/appliance for a month using Bluetooth controlled Android App.
- It can help the consumer or even utilities to reduce the unusual power consumption.
- By keeping the track of the units consumed by a device in real time, a user can easily calculate the electricity bill which helps in checking unusual high electric bills.
- This project will also provide remote operation for switching i.e. a user can switch off the device remotely.
To make a Smart Energy maNagement Switch (SENSe) which will help the user to be in control of the energy consumption of various appliances through a mobile application.
