Smart Density Based Traffic Light Control System
Our project focuses on the reduction of traffic congestion through creating efficient traffic flow. The efficient flow is achieved by reducing time spent on the red light and decreasing the wasted time on green light while the road is empty. A smart traffic light control system works on the bases of reducing traffic congestions and delays on a road junction. This project uses image processing to calculate the traffic density and set different timers for the traffic signals to create a traffic system that reduces delays. The project works towards the betterment of society by reducing the traffic congestion through creating efficient traffic flow.
Our project aims to reduce the traffic congestion in peak hours by efficiently increasing traffic flow. It reduces unnecessary waiting time on signals. It optimizes the utlization of traffic signals and eliminates the need of manually handle traffic through human labor. It also seeks to decrease the time for emergency vehicles to wait in the signal and give them higher priority. It aims to decrease dependency on fixed signal time. Our project also strives to reduce human stress level and restrain them from breaking traffic rules.
This efficient traffic flow is achieved by creating a system of image acquisition and image recognition that can differentiate the different levels of traffic, by using cameras, and make decision based on the difference between the pictures. The calculation of the traffic density through Image processing using a Jetson Nano developers kit Board while the decision making and traffic light controlling is done using an Arduino Mega board which changes the leds at appropriate time and changes the timer on the display depending on the density of traffic.
Some of the benefits provided by our projects are, the reduction of traffic congestion, decreases in time waisted on traffic signals, decrease in strees that a driver faces, decrease in carbon emissions, reduction in transportation cost of goods, decrease in accidents, deacrese in traffic law breaking and low risk of fatal injuries due to delay in reaching medical care.
This project is focused on creating a model that can be used to show real life usage of image processing techniques to reduce the time spent on the signal by continuosly adjusting the timer, in real time based on the density present, to provide an efficient traffic signal. This project will use an jetson nano as a controller that will process the images taken from the camera and find out the traffic density and an arduino mega controller that will control the traffic signal modules and there respective timer displays to adjust the time based on the density found from the jetson nano controller.
