Project Area of Specialization Information & Communication TechnologyProject SummaryThe project is about transforming a mobile phone into an hearing aid. Moreover, a standalone hardware modules will be build that can be used as an Insect Repellent devices in home appliances such as Refrigerators and Microwave Ovens or as as Hearing Aid device for sound impaired individuals.
An insect repellent will help protect from mosquitoes, cockroaches, mice, and lizards etc that spread diseases like Malaria, Dengue, Chikungunya, and Yellow Fever. Such a device is designed to work by emitting high-frequency sounds in the range of 20KHz to 30 KHz that are inaudible for humans to hear but are just the right frequency to drive Insects, Mosquitoes, and Lizards away.
Moreover, it should be noted that there are over 1.5 Billion people globally who live with hearing loss. This number could rise up to over 2.5 billion by 2030. We are integrating the functionality of a hearing aid in cell phone and standalone hardware module to help reduce this number. As a Telecommunication Engineer, we know how to work with frequencies and to modulate them (upconvert or downconvert) to make the sound audible for a hearing-impaired person.
Project ObjectivesThe objectives of our project are:
- Objective 1: To design an insect repellent and hearing aid module/device.
- Objective 2: To test the hardware modules, get feedback and perform optimization.
- Objective 3: To develop a user friendly app in the Android based cell phone which transform the mobile phone into a hearing aid.
The steps for implementation of our project are stated below:
- Step 1: Develop a base code for frequency modulation and basic functionality.
- Step 2: Improving the operation of the device for being user-friendly.
- Step 3: Implementing the full working of a Hearing Aid in the device.
- Step 4: Testing the device and getting feedback from live humans about the device.
- Step 5: Application of feedback for improving the device.
The main benefits of the project are an effective hearing aid with user-friendly operation and insect repellent for protection.
Other than these, the project also fulfills some Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) as set by the United Nations. These SDGs are mentioned below:
- No Poverty: Reducing poverty by allowing access to hearing aids for everyone with help of smartphones.
- Good Health and Well-Being: Promoting Good health and well-being by easy diagnosis and correction of damaged hearing.
- Reduced Inequalities: Eliminating inequalities among hearing damaged and normal hearing people by improving their hearing ability.
The final deliverables after completion of the project are stated below:
- A hardware device that can generate audio tone in the ultrasonic band to Repel Insects and Lizards at a distance of 10 feet and also work as a Hearing Aid.
- A user-friendly mobile app that integrates the function of both devices mentioned above.
- A detailed report on the functionality and results found after testing the device.
