We propose an intelligent system for visually impaired or aged people to provide them assistance in order to walk. We have designed a system which is composed of smart stick, mobile application and web interface for providing a platform for online information. By using smart walking stick, visually impaired people will be able to detect any kind of obstacle. There is a RF remote to find the stick if it got misplaced. Mobile application is used for locating the person and web interface is used to provide help from nearby rescue. And if the visually impaired person falls down, then the location of the person will be recorded with the help of mobile app and then it will be uploaded on the website and it will notify the nearby rescue for help by a text message. Stick will also tell the health condition of the person.
Project ObjectivesThe basic purpose of designing the smart stick is to improve the activities of daily routine of visually impaired and aged people. The smart stick will help them to perform their tasks more efficiently than before.
Objectives of this systems are given below:
- Design smart stick, integrate and interface sensors
- Data collection from each sensor so that it can be used for different purpose.
- Analyze data from different sensors for different operation to enhance the mobility of visually impaired person.
Hardware implementation
We interfaced hardware components on a microcontroller and the ultrasonic sensor is interface at the front of stick so that obstacles can be detected easily. Accelerometer is used to measure the acceleration when the stick falls. And gyroscope will measure the angular velocity and orientation of the falling stick. Bluetooth module is used to provide communication between smartphone and microcontroller by serial port communication. There will be code in the flash memory of microcontroller in order to handle every component of hardware. Data can be exchange after pairing microcontroller with smartphone. Data from different sensors are being sent to microcontroller and through Bluetooth module data can be transmitted to smartphone. We use RF based remote to locate the stick if it got misplaced and heart rate sensor to determine the heart rate of the person. The heart rate sensor will be placed on the handle of the stick from where the user holds stick.
Software implementation
Smartphone app A user-friendly mobile is developed for visually impaired person for obtaining their location.
Web Interface A web interface that will be used for uploading the coordinates of the location of the person.
Benefits of the ProjectThe major benefit of our project is that the user will be safe in any condition. Moreover smart asistive stick will provide independence to the user so that he/she can walk easily.
By using smart assistive stick blind person can easily know the route and most importantly optimum
It also provide the heart rate of the user so that user remain safe.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableLocation of user
We will get the coordinates by using GPS module. These coordinates are being transferred to the nearby rescue through GSM module with a text message having coordinates that can be extracted by an application on the mobile and Google map is used to find the exact location of the user by using these coordinates.
Obstacle Detection
Ultrasonic sensor will detect obstacles in front of user. If the obstacle is detected, then vibration will be produced. Earphones are used for transferring information regarding object detection to protect user from any danger.
Fall detection
Now if the user falls down, then the current location of the user is recorded by android app which uses google maps to obtain the exact location of user. This information will be uploaded to the website and a text msg will be sent to nearby rescue by using GSM module. The fall detection will be performed by accelerometer and gyroscope. There will be different data when only stick falls and stick along with the person has different angle and speed.
Finding of stick
If the person forgets where they kept the stick, RF based remote is used to locate the stick. When user presses the button on remote, it will produce buzzer sound on the stick which will be helpful in finding the stick.
