Project Area of Specialization Internet of ThingsProject SummaryBees are the most important part of our ecosystem because they pollinate the crops around the globe which continues the cycle of food chain. In modern age, bees are facing highest death rate due to pesticides and extreme weather conditions due to global warming. Thermoregulation (Thermoregulation: a process in which bees regulate their hives temperature by fanning and clustering) is quite difficult for them in these conditions and to avoid that the bees migrate towards adaptive areas. At new place they start from the scratch which cost poor production of honey.
To overcome these problems, we need to focus on the problems and as engineers its our responsibility to design a feasible solution.
Pakistan honey industry rely on small scale beekeepers who are lagging in management of Apiaries (apairy: site where multiple beehives are placed). They elevates the robbery ( bees behavior to attack on their neighbor hives to rob the food stores (honey/sugar syrup) by unestimated (less/more than the hive requirement) feeding
Smart Apiaries is an IoT based prototype which monitors and control temperature and humidity within the beehive and also provides the easy mechanism of feeding.
Project ObjectivesWe are ready to achive the smarter way of monitoring and controlling beehive's brooding environment (an environment to increase the population within the hive).
We are also simplifing the feeding mechanism during off-season (in which the honey sources are less than the required demand of the apiary), which lowers the brooding and also kicks the robbery (a behavior in which bees attack their neighbour colonies and kill each other leading the death of a colony or the whole apiary).
Our feeding system will provide a solution to the above discussed problem and it will also save the time of the beekeepers.
Project Implementation MethodDHT11 sensors to monitor the humidity and temperature.
Peltier plates to regulate the temperature within the suitable extremes.
Humidifiers/ Dripping technique to enhance the humidity in dry season.
Flow sensors and solenoid valves for controlled feeding.
Benefits of the ProjectAccording to wikipedia, Pakistan is one of the world's largest producers and suppliers of food and crops according to the different sources. Chickpea (3rd), Apricot (6th), Cotton (4th), Date Palm (5th), Sugarcane (5th), Onion (7th), Kinnow/mandarin oranges (6th), Rice (11th)
Pakistan ranks eighth worldwide in farm output, according to the List of countries by GDP sector composition.
Six crops out of the above discussed need pollinators for pollination. Bees are preferred among pollinators because they have certain characteristics
They donot harm the crops.
They live in the form of colonies and have higher population as compared to other pollinators.
Humans can manage them easily as compared to other pollinators.
Honey can be the byproduct with the increased crop yield.
But the problem is how to handle them without experience?
To answer it we should consider the fact that if we become able to monitor and control the parameters which affects directly the bees then we can say that an inexperience person can atleast keep the bees with some basic knowledge.
Also bees are much sensitive and unable to survive in extreme conditions. If we provide them the suitable conditions then we can increase pollination in extremely hot and cold areas hence we can increase crops of those areas.
Every year thousands of bee colonies die due to extreme weather conditions and inefficient feeding. Our designed project will not only give the boost to the bee colonies population but provides 24/7 a year monitoring and controlling brooding factors and reduce the death rate during extreme weather.
If a person is willing to eat pure honey extracted in front of his sight and is unable to handle his own hive then this project ends with a solution for his problem. This project will provide a hive to him which will be monitored with less human intervention and will provide honey on his own home, farmhouse or agriculture land.
It will boost the honey industry within Pakistan.
NOTE: The project will be a one time investment for the beekeepers so the price may not matter.
