Project Summary

• People with deaf-mute disability use different methods to communicate with one another, there are number of strategies available that can be used for communication and such a common method of communication is sign language.
• The main aim of this project is to develop an android chatting app which will use both english and sign language for communication between deaf-mute and normal people.
• In this project Text-to-Sign and Sign-to-Text technology are implemented. Initially the Sign Language will be typed by the deaf person on one end of the communication and it will be received as both a text message and a Sign Language on the other end of the communication.
• A special app keyboard will be developed which will consist of both english alphabets and their respective sign language for deaf-mute and normal people to type in their messages.

Project Objectives

• The main objective of this project is to have a normal communication between a deaf, mute, or hard of hearing persons and a normal person through this android application.
• Our objective is to design a solution that is intuitive and simple which simplifies the communication for the majority of people with deaf and dumb.
•  To provide an efficient and accurate way to convert sign language into text.
• To enable deaf-mute people to interact with smart phones and other smart devices(Tablets, iPads etc).

Project Implementation Method

• We will be using flutter to develop a chatting application.
• We will also train a Machine Learning model for sign recognition and implement it in our flutter application.
• For model training and development we will use python and OpenCV.

Benefits of the Project

• It will reduce the communication barrier between deaf-mute and normal people.
• It will enable childern to interact with smart devices because it is difficult for deaf-mute to do so without a teletypewriter(tty).
• Deaf-mute can easily communicate with normal people and do not feel left-out anymore.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

• It will allow a user to Signup/Signin into the application.
• A Special Keyboard is placed, in such a way a normal person can type by seeing English alphabets and a deaf or mute person can type by different Sign Language signs.
• Messages can be entered through speech recognition.
• Message will be typed on one end of the communication and it will be received as both a text message and a Sign Language on the other end of the communication.
