Sensor Based Climate Automation in Agriculture

Weather and climate has a strong influence on food production and crop yield in terms of cropping area (area planted or harvested) and cropping intensity (number of crops grown within a year). The world's changing climate is negatively affecting the crop production leading to food security hazards.

Project Summary

Weather and climate has a strong influence on food production and crop yield in terms of cropping area (area planted or harvested) and cropping intensity (number of crops grown within a year). The world's changing climate is negatively affecting the crop production leading to food security hazards. Therefore, we need to consider these aspects on crops production to mitigate the affects of climate change. This project reviews available evidence on how climate might influence these under-studied components of crop production and develop a sensor-based system to monitor and control environmental factors on crop production.

Project Objectives

The objectives of the project is to monitor and somewhat control the affect of climate change on crop production using sensors that can detect

  • Current Atmospheric Temperature
  • Humidity
  • Air Quality
  • Light Intensity
  • Soil Moisture

The system will use sensor-readings of these parameters and automate relevant parameters for agriculture, including automatic water supply , autmatic cooling supply, switch light on off and others.

The main aim of this project is to reduce the human effort and increase production as well as controlling the wastage of water.

Project Implementation Method

The project will use data collected from various sensors, store the data into secure database, and display using interactive graphs. We are going to analyse the data to develop a smart decision support system. The sensors that are required are:

DHT 11 sensors that measure the Temperature and Humidity locally based on esp32 microcontroller.

NDIR CO? SENSOR measures the CO2 Quality in the air. The NDIR CO? SENSOR Gas sensors are used in air quality control equipment’s and are suitable for detecting or measuring of CO2.

YL69 soil moisture sensor or the hygrometer is usually used to detect the humidity in soil. it is perfect to build an automatic watering system or to monitor the soil moisture of plants.

A photoresistor (or light-dependent resistor, LDR, or photo-conductive cell) is a light-controlled variable resistor. The resistance of a photoresistor decreases with increasing incident light intensity; in other words, it exhibits photoconductivity.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

We are going to deliver a smart climate automation system with attached sensors and a friendly dashboard displaying graphical visualisations.

The details of the proposed sensors are:

Dashboard:

The sensors dashboard provides the user with a center point where they can view and control the connected sensors and actuators.

Some of the features that this view offer is:

  • Information about the currently connected sensors/actuators.
  • A graph with data for each sensor/actuators.
  • A sensor/actuators property section.
  • Configuration of sensors done through C++
  • Breadboard is the main hub of all the sensors
  • We configured the sensors in such a way that it gives us the understandable values
  • All the values are then shown in form of graphs in website and in android application in labeled form.
