Project Title

SEHAT Smart E Health App for Telediagnosis and first opinion

Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject Summary

The medical world has evolved drastically due to advancements in technology. With the help of the telemedicine concept, we can gain access to medical services and information that might normally be unavailable. In the field of Telemedicine, considerable work has been done to record patient data, sharing health information, communication between doctor and patient, video and voice call, and providing health services remotely.

In Pakistan, various systems and apps have been developed for providing ease of finding the doctor and getting online appointments. However, there is no system or application that provide remote diagnostics and doctor’s opinion based on symptoms and vital signs.

In this project, we develop a mobile app and hardware-based combined system to facilitate the telediagnosis and provide doctors’ instant first opinion based on vital signs data and patient's symptoms.  The system allows the measurement of vital signs (i.e. temperature, pulse rate, blood pressure, weight, and height) using an all in one hardware module. The vital sign data is then transmitted to a custom developed mobile app via Bluetooth. The app further allows the user to select the symptoms from the available list to provide his/her health status. The user symptoms and vital sign data are then sent to a pool of doctors from the database available within the system. The intelligent selection of medical consultants is based on the symptoms of the user and vital signs data.

Project Objectives
  1. Design the layout of the system based on the literature study.
  2. Develop the hardware module for vital signs measurement.
  3. Develop the mobile application and communication between the app and hardware module.
  4. Create the database of health symptoms, related diseases and consultant doctors in the specific field areas
  5. Develop the algorithm for the smart selection of specific doctors based on the vital sign data and selected symptoms.
  6. Demonstrate the fully integrated system having communication between the patient’s app, doctor’s app, and hardware module.
Project Implementation Method

The project implementation is divided into two parts: the hardware module for vital sign measurement and the mobile application.

The hardware module will be implemented using sensors and the microcomputer (such as raspberry pi). The hardware module for vital signs will include the sensors to measure body temperature, pulse rate, blood pressure, height, and weight. The hardware module will be developed on an integrated mechanical assembly. The software part will consist of a mobile app that will record the vital signs data from the hardware module. It will also enable the user to provide personal data and health states such as symptoms, age, gender, severity, and duration of symptoms and other related information. The algorithm running in the app background will perform the smart selection of specialist doctors based on the provided user data and the data will be sent to specific doctors via the internet for the purpose of telediagnosis and first opinion. Through this process, the doctor will be able to provide the first opinion, recommend the prescriptions and direct the patient.

Benefits of the Project

The basic medical facilities are one of the fundamental needs of our lives. In Pakistan, the health facilities are very limited in the rural and sub-urban areas.  The benefit of our project “SEHAT: Smart E-Health App for Telediagnosis and First Opinion” is to provide telediagnosis service to people living in rural areas. The system will allow instant connectivity between the patient and doctor and will allow the patient to provide a medical history and receive the first opinion. Currently, no such system of the mobile app exists which can provide a direct link between patient and doctor for prescription, suggestion and first opinion. The other benefits of the project are as follow:

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final demonstration will be based on integrated hardware and software. The hardware module will be demonstrated in the form of an all-in-one vital signs’ measurement device, which will be connected to the mobile app via Bluetooth wireless connection.

The demonstrated software part will be a graphical user interface based fully loaded interactive mobile app. The app will gather the data from the user and the hardware module. The health data will further be sent to the doctor through the internet.
