Project Summary

An SDR based signal Monitoring and Direction Finding System is to be designed and developed for integration with a fixed wing/multicopter UAV for interference investigation at Radar/Communication sites.

SDR used could be bladeRF or USRP, based on the approach selected. In first step SDR is used to analyze the electromagnetic spectrum, then the system should find the direction of the intended signal, then after that the quadcopter or the fixed wing aircraft on which system is mounted should reach the intended destination of interference.

Project Objectives

Objectives of the project are as follows:

i.) Signal Direction Finder System integrated with quadcopter for recognition of interference signals on radar/communication site

This can be further divided into five parts:

i.) Spectrum Analyzing System

ii.) Direction Finding System

iii.) Above two systems integrated with a quadcopter

iv.) Quadcopter autonomous arrival on the interference signal place

v.) Development of GUI for ground operating person

Project Implementation Method

Project Implementation strategy is as follows:

i.) Selection of SDR based upon different factors i.e weight, cost, input channels etc.

ii.) Spectrum Analyzing through SDR on GNU Radio

iii.) Selection of Algorithm for Direction Finding based upon selected hardware e.g MUSIC algorithm, ESPIRIT Algorithm.

iv.) Implementing algorithm with SDR with laptop or PC

v.) Integrating this system with quadcopter i.e using onboard computer such as Raspberry Pi rather than PC or laptop

vi.) Autonomous navigation of Quadcopter with this whole system onboard

vii.) Developing a Graphical User Interface for ground based controller to monitor the autonomous navigation and control of quadcopter

Benefits of the Project

Benefits of the project are as follows:

i.) Signal Direction Finding system available in the market are extremely expensive, this project provides a cheap solution to this problem

ii.) There is no aerial signal direction finding system available in the market, this system provides cheap aerial solution to the problem

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

Final Deliverables with technical details are:

  1. Scanning the whole Electromagnetic spectrum and monitoring interference signals
  2. USRP/BLADERF based direction finding system with multiple antennas
  3. Integration of DF System on Fixed Wing/Multicopter Aircraft
  4. Autonomous Navigation of Multicopter to the target site
  5. Development of GUI for monitoring autonomous navigation
