Project Title

S-HELM Smart Electrochemical gas detecting Helmet for Miners

Project Area of Specialization Electrical/Electronic EngineeringProject Summary

S-Helm is a smart helmet for miners, which detects the different levels of hazardous gases in mines like H2S, NOx, NH3, CH4, CO2, CO, and SO2. A minor change in the concentration of these gases can cause serious damage to the miners, and in critical conditions, the miners can die as well. Not only this but it measures the temperature of the mine along with the humidity level. After the measurements, it records the values to a local server.

This helmet can communicate with the other helmet of its own kind. This helps us in building a long array of connections in a mine, and it will also help us in finding the location of the miner with in the mine.

Our project is based on the community service, we want to make the mines safer for the miners.

Project Objectives

So far the health security for miners in the mining industry is zero. This means that there are no safety measures for the miners set by the mining industry or the company. Which usually leads to the death of hardworking miners of Pakistan. According to Pakistan Today and other media forums, on average there are 160+ deaths per month because of the negligence of the company or industry.

This situation motivated us to make something for the miners of Pakistan. So, we decided to make a smart helmet for miners which will detect the harmful gases and monitor the level of gases, temperature, and humidity.

Project Implementation Method

We are making an IOT based solution for this problem. We are using different sensors, like MQ-4, MQ135, and HDC2080 withESP8266, ESP 32 as a processor chip and MKR FOX 1200 as a wifi chip.

              -LPG.

              -NOx

              -Alcohol

              -Benzene

              -SO2

              -NH3

              -H2S

Benefits of the Project Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final deliverable will detect the harmful levels of hazardous gases using electrochemical sensors like MQ-135, MQ-4, ZEO-3, along with the temperature and humidity.

S-Helm will save the data of the gases, temperature, and humidity on a local server, and in the presence of the internet, it will upload the data to "cayenne" an online server using the ESP 32,  ESP 8266, and MKR FOX 1200.

S-Helm will be able to communicate to the other S-Helm within a certain range of distance using Mesh networking. Every helmet will become a node that will send data to the other node/helmet and the main goal of the mesh networking is to send data to the parent node/the helmet of the head of the project/mine.
