Run of river micro hydro power plant
Pakistan has around 60,000 MW hydro potential available but only 11% of this has been developed so far.The main aim of the project “Run of river micro power plant” is to utilize the natural water flow in order to produce clean and green energy.
As the flow of water is not constant and is varying all the time so the main challenge of these sort of projects is of getting a regulated Voltage at the output irrespective of the variation in the water flow. So inorder to overcome this challenge a circuitry is designed which provides a constant Voltage at the output by doing buck-boost operations.
The main components we used in our project are; a generator which will be coupled with a turbine, an AVR(Automatic Voltage Regulator),Battery Charging Circuitry,a battery, relays and an inverter.
Turbine will convert the kinetic energy of the flowing water to mechanical energy. A generator is coupled with the turbine which will convert this mechanical energy to Electrical energy (unregulated).AVR regulate this unregulated voltage from the generator terminals.Battery charging circuitry helps to charge the battery efficiently and relays are used to ensure continuous flow of power to the loads.
Following are the objectives of our Final year Project:
1. Utilizing Natural Water flow
2.Generation of clean energy
3. Voltage Regulation
4. Power storage
5. Portable micro power plant
•Turbine coupled with generator.
•12 Volt AC generator
•AC to DC Rectifier.
• Smoothing Filter to remove DC ripples.
•Voltage regulation using PWM to get constant 14 volt DC.
•14 Volt DC to charge battery.
•DC to AC inverter and then load.
1. It produces clean and green energy.
2. No water storage is required like in dams.
3. It has Low maintenance cost.
4. It can be installed in remote and hilly areas where conventional power is not provided yet.
5. It is a cheaper source of generating electricity as it uses natural flow of water instead of fuel, coal etc.
6. It provides with the facility of power storage which is feasible when flow of water is not enough to generate electricity.
7. It is more efficient renewable energy system then solar and wind as they can’t provide electricity 24/7.
Power is generated using natural flow of water. A generator is coupled with rotating turbine that generates variable voltage. Automatic voltage regulator is designed to stabilize the voltage at desired voltage level. Power storage capability is provided by charging battery and power is stored in it. finally DC to AC conversion is done using inverter and load is connected to it.
