The project is actually a Road Health Assessment tool. This will facilitate Highway Maintenance Organizations by reducing their time to monitoring the roads manually. The tool has a desktop as well as a web application. Data on the defects on the roads will be collected through a camera mounted on a vehicle. Then, an ML inference will be performed on the data using the YOLOv5 model. This processed data will be then saved in an encrypted format and uploaded to the web application. The web application is written using a python framework, Django. This allows the road data management and also visualizes the road on the map. There are a number of modules including Plan Management, User Management, Inventory Management, etc. in this web application which is used for the better management of the road assessments

Project Objectives

The main objective of our project is to speed up the process of the road assessments. We want to provide our services to national as well as international clients. We have seen that the manual process of road assessments is very slow and time taking, also hectic at the same time. Our tool will prove beneficial for the authorities conducting manual road surveys. Whole process will be automatic

Project Implementation Method

Road Health Monitoring System will be a system to facilitate the Highway Maintenance Organizations to efficiently collect and manage data related to existing roads. The system will comprise two applications, a desktop/mobile application, and a web application. These two applications will work together for the collection and management of road data.

The Desktop/Mobile application will be installed on the client's tool and performs ML inference using the YOLOv5 model on the collected data of roads for filtering based on defects. The data will collect with a camera and GPS Sensor placed on a local vehicle and will be converted to a common format which is then given to the application for processing. The processed data is then saved in an encrypted format and can be uploaded to the web application

The web application written with the Django framework allows the management of road data along with visualization of road on maps. This application will also have other important modules like User Management, Plan Management for projects, and Inventory Management. Hence, it is a complete management system for organizations

Benefits of the Project

The core benefit of our road health monitoring tool is the automatic inspection of the roads. Where manual inspection takes a lot of days and focus, our tool can do that in just a couple of minutes and with the most accuracy. All we need to do is just mount the camera vision tool on a vehicle, and that camera will record all the defects on the roads with their GPS locations. The best point is that the vehicle could be of any type. It does not need to be of a special type. It could be a truck, a wagon, a car, a tourist bus, or any other vehicle.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The final deliverable will be some hardware device that records frames of the complete track (which is to be inspected) along with its GPS points. Then the video will be passed to the software part which separates the valid and invalid frames using the YOLOv5 algorithm. Then the valid frames will be kept in JSON format along with their details and then our Deep Learning algorithm does our remaining job which will be detecting the type of crack or defect on the track. Then valid and processed information will be passed to our web application where all information will be shown on a map along with images. And we can also store a record of all defects on some tracks in past and present with details on how we tackled these defects in the past.
