RFID Base Attendance System With Messaging Alert
Project Area of Specialization Computer ScienceProject Summary“RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) Attendance System” is a project which is developed for the student’s attendance record. These days there are various educational institutions increasing for every day and these are followed by the requirement of managing the attendance. So there are the lots of students who studying in the educational institutes, so we developed an RFID (Radio Frequency Identification) based Attendance System. First, we have to create an id for student and the ID card as well, which will holds the student’s data. It was as designed to provide an automatic attendance system which will depends on students and teachers as well.
By using this project we can easily manage all the data without any extra manual effort. Before everything first let me show you, how this project actually works. First of all, a teacher swipes a card and is marked present and then messages are sent to the own teacher mobile phone, that that you has arrived at time, If not then absent is marked. If the student swipe their cards within a specified time they will be marked present and the rest of the students will be marked absent and messages will be sent to their parents.
The emergence of electronic paradigm for learning compared to traditional method and availability of almost all information on the information superhighway(Internet), nowadays have caused students to be less motivated to come to the class rooms than ever before. Laziness on the part of students, nonchalance to school work, extra social activities that have no importance in aiding the objectives of the institution and a lot more, may prevent students from attending classes. Sequel to these, teacher and administrator in most developing countries have had to come up with ways to ensure a healthy participation from students, and make sure that the student-teacher interactive relationship is kept intact. This in some cases have come in simple forms like roll calls, while in more interesting cases, can be formats like surprise quizzes, extra credit in class, etc.
Project ObjectivesThe ability of RFID systems to deliver precise and accurate data about tagged items will improve efficiency and bring other benefits to business community and consumers alike in the not distant future. In this paper, we present an intelligent RFID based lecture attendance access control and management system tailored around Nigerian Universities’ Commission (NUC) policy of ensuring a 70% course attendance by students for a course before likelihood of writing a semester examination for any course. The application of RFID Technology to student course attendance monitoring problem especially in developing countries in our proposition will lead to elimination or reduction of the quality time wasted during manual collection of attendance, creation of a student database management system that is not prone to errors or being manipulated by anyone and above all aids in better management of classroom statistics for allocation of attendance scores in the final grading of student performance in a particular course.
Project Implementation MethodThere are several solutions proposed to automate the attendance in the last few years to address the limitations of manual attendance system. These solutions are based on automation of attendance system using state of the art technologies such as RFID, NFC, QR scanner, microcontroller and machine learning. After reviewing the existing solutions, this author has selected RFID technology to propose a SYSTEM because it is cheap and easy to implement. The proposed system is a medium project because it is to be accomplished in eight months using a team of undergraduate students. The project is divided into two phases: requirements engineering in phase 1; and the proposed system is built, tested and reviewed in phase 2. The first task of requirement engineering is to select a suitable methodology to develop the proposed system. Agile methodologies are practiced in software industry from last several years such as XP and Scrum. Each of the agile methodology has its own pros and cons. XP is extremely suitable for short projects with small teams due to its strong engineering practices but it lacks in management practices. Scrum is well known for small and medium projects due to its strong management practices but it is deficient in engineering practices. Therefore a customized Scrum methodology is used to develop the proposed system to achieve the benefits of both methodologies.
Benefits of the ProjectRecent trends in Information and Communication Technology (ICT) embrace several applications in a variety of educational and industrial domains in the last several years. This research focuses to solve one of the promising problems of an educational domain to take attendance smartly using the Radio Frequency Identification (RFID) system. Current attendance system in King Abdul-Aziz University (KAU) Saudi Arabia is partly solving the attendance problem. There are several problems in the existing attendance systems such as time-consuming, the chance of mistakes, truancy issues, no contact with parent/guardian and not efficient because of roll call as taking manual attendance. The proposed RFID based attendance system will provide robust, secure and automatic attendance. The proposed system will use modern technology and support to institutions and parents to deal with most of the problems of existing attendance systems. There are several other benefits of RFID based system such as desktop, daily absent report, an automatic SMS alert to parent/guardian, reduce administrative work, improve the ratio of attendance, economical and highly efficient. The case study method will be used as a research design. The proposed system will have desktop application.
Technical Details of Final DeliverableOur final year project is RFID Base Attendance System purposed to ensure the secure and reliable attendance system. Our project will be completed round 70-75 days. In this timeline firstly we have to complete the requirements which can take some 4-5 days then work on designs. After that properly start work on making the project which contains all the steps e.g. creating the database, developing the desktop application and assembling and connecting the hardware of the model and also completing the documentation as well. After that all the last process is to testing and finalizing the project.
