Relay selection in UAV based wireless networks
Project Area of Specialization Information & Communication TechnologyProject SummaryWireless communications through Unmanned Aerial Vehicles (UAVs) provide cost-effective wireless connectivity without infrastructure coverage. UAVs are utilized as Flying, Aerial base stations, they can boost the availability of existing framework base remote systems, for example, broadband and cell systems. Contrasted with earthbound base stations, the upside of utilizing UAVs as flying base stations is their capacity to modify their elevation, keep away from impact with snags, much simple to send, simple reconfiguration, and improve the probability of setting up observable pathway (LoS) correspondence connects to portable clients.
Unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) is the emerging technology in the field of wireless communication. UAVs are used in wireless networks to extend the coverage area of the networks or to provide better connectivity at the cell edge. UAVs are used as aerial base stations, as cellular connected user and as an aerial relay in the network. Relay provides connectivity between source and destination to extend the coverage area of cell. UAVs receives the signal from the ground station (BTS) and forward the signal to the destination (edge user).
we are developing an algorithm that will improve the overall network performance. In terms of throughput, energy efficiency and life time of UAV's. This algorithm is based on Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA). Non-orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) is an essential technology for the radio access design of 5G cellular networks. Power-domain NOMA works on the concept of assigning varying power levels to users within the same frequency and time block.
The proposed relay selection scheme depends upon many parameters like placement of UAVs, height of UAVs, distance between BTS and UAVs, life time of UAVs, path loss, SINR and channel quality etc.

Methodology of Research:
Literature review:
[1] In the first research paper we studied the basic architecture of UAV's based wireless networks. But it does not explain any mathematical model.
[2] We studied the new relaying technique termed as mobile-relaying with high mobility relays. But it does not explain the bandwidth allocation, it also has limited buffer size and throughput-delay tradeoff.
[3] Overview of UAVs as Aerial base stations, as aerial relay and as cellular connected user. Also highlighted NOMA in UAV based systems. But it unable to explain height and life time of UAVs.
[4] Developed an adaptive handoff algorithm to dynamically adjust the UAV-AP to improve network performances. But it is only for two UAVs which are connected to each other not for dense network.
[5] It explain total power loss. overall outage and overall BER. But it does not consider practical factors such as heading and acceleration.
Develop an effcient UAV relaying algorithm:
After the literature review we saw the tradeoff between the different parameters while developing the proposed Non-Orthogonal Multiple Access NOMA based relaying algorithm. Our focus is on the channel quality, throughput and battery life time of the UAVs. And we are developing an efficient NOMA based relaying algorithm.
Coding simulation in MATLAB:
To developed the proposed algorithm, we are coding on MATLAB (software).
Evaluating the proposed algorithm:
After the development of the UAV relaying algorithm we will evaluate the proposed algorithm.

Wireless communications are expected to play a key role in future wireless communication systems. UAV-aided wireless communication offers one promising solution to provide wireless connectivity for devices without infrastructure coverage. As compared to high altitude platforms (HAPs) based communications, or those based on terrestrial or satellite systems, wireless communication with low altitude UAVs (typically at an altitude not exceeding several kilometers) also have several important advantages. On demand UAV systems are more cost effective and can be much easily deployed, which makes them more suitable for temporary and unexpected or limited duration missions. With the help of LAP UAVs, short-range line-of-sight (LoS) communication links can be established in most cases/scenarios, which potentially leads to significant performance improvement over direct communication ??between source and destination. ?????
UAV-aided relaying where UAVs are used to provide wireless connectivity between two or more distant users or user groups without reliable direct communication links.
- Surveillance of sensitive areas/terrains where the deployment of a permanent network is not feasible.
- Communication gap during natural disasters when the infrastructural communications setups are destroyed.
- Provides better connectivity at the cell edge by using relay in between the source and destination.
- By deploying efficiently the UAVs as a relay we can enhanced the channel quality.
- UAVs have been utilized essentially for military purposes, i.e. UAVs can be used in an unfriendly area to decease pilot losses.
- UAVs also have new respectful and business applications that is average model beings atmosphere control, cargo transports.
- UAVs can also be used for timberland fire recognition, traffic the executives, crisis search and salvage, retransmission of correspondence and others.
The proposed relay selection scheme aims to increase the coverage area of the cell in the existing network. UAVs will be used as the relay nodes between the source and destination which will increases the coverage area of the network.
UAV-aided system will enhance the overall throughput of the network by using the Non-Orthogonal multiple access (NOMA) technique. The throughput of NOMA based communications is much better than that of OMA.
In UAVs based wireless communications the system performance will much better in term of energy efficiency and life time of the UAV's. The UAVs will adjust in such a way to efficiently utilize the energy of the UAV's. Also maintain the channel quality and the data rate of the system.
- The proposed relay selection scheme aims to improve the overall network performance. In terms of throughput, energy ef?ciency, and lifetime.
- Our proposed NOMA based network is superior in performance than OMA based network.
- Moreover, the results of this project will provide the useful insight into the impact of different parameters on over all network.
