Project Title

Reducing convective heat losses in solar dish cavity receivers through a modified air-curtain system

Project Area of Specialization Mechanical EngineeringProject Summary

In this project, we have proposed a forced air circulation system to reduce the convective heat loss across the aperture of a dish concentrator which is accompanied by its fabrication. The function of the proposed system is validated with computational fluid dynamics (CFD) simulations. Compared to a concentrator without such a system, the modified solar dish cavity receiver could clearly reduce the convective heat loss and its fluctuation in the receiver

Project Objectives

PROJECT OBJECTIVE:
•    Reducing convective heat losses in solar dish cavity receiver using the modified air-curtain system.
•    Fabrication of the cavity receiver along with the modified air-curtain system.

Project Implementation Method

The project implementation method can be done in a parabolic solar dish system, where due to less convective heat losses more heat energy can be gathered at the point of convergence resulting in more efficiency of solar panels

Benefits of the Project

The benefits that we will get after the completion of our study would be increased efficiency of the parabolic dish system although dish systems have the highest efficiency among all concentrating solar power systems this research will lead to much better utilization of the parabolic dish system and increased cost effectiveness. As parabolic dish systems are quite expensive, the improvement in it's efficiency would increase it's use in power and other related sectors.

Technical Details of Final Deliverable

The project resultant would be a cavity receiver embedded with a fan (modified air-curtain) rather than a traditional nozzle which would prevent the cold air from entering the cavity and keep the hot air inside the cavity. This forms a closed forced air circulation system thus reducing the convective heat losses, while considerably increasing the performance of the receiver. The proposed system is validated through computational fluid dynamics simulations.
